Cathy Woodman is an English writer from Winchester, the county town of Hampshire, England. She started her working life as a vet officer, even though the author admits that she loved to read all sorts of novels especially though long night shifts hours. It was not until her children were born that she quit her full-time job to look after them.

Woodman was announced the winner of Harry Bowling First Novel Award in 2002 for her first novel. The author first novel, Under the Bonnet, was published in 2004 while her second book, Our House was released in 2005. The third, Family Matters and the fourth Boy Next Door were published in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Currently, Cathy Woodman works as a full-time writer.

City Girl, Country Vet (2010)

City Girl, Country Vet, is the first novel in Talyton St. George series written by English bestselling author Cathy Woodman. The book describes the narrative of a London veterinarian Maz Harwood who has indeed learned the hard way that you cannot mix love with work. In response her best friend Emma from the vet school requests her to take a break and practice her profession in the English countryside for about six months. Maz decides to take this opportunity as she feels that she only needs the change of scenery.

It is one thing her skills for the willies, but it is another deal with the unfriendly and unwelcoming locals, and a growing rivalry with the local vet officers and the worst is the discovery that her friend’s practice is in most dangerous condition as her broken heart.

Things become complicated when she gets to meet her rival’s flamboyant son, who seems unsuitable for a prospect. The only challenge that Maz faces is winning over the locals, saving the lives of her patients, ensuring that Emma’s practice does not go under and finding love again. Will she be able to achieve all these despite the rivalry she is facing?

Cathy Woodman first novel is a comforting fiction, especially for animal lovers. It will remind you of the James Herriott real stories detailed in his books of the 1970’s. The romance is sweet while the characters are vividly described. Even though Maz faces some challenges while getting accustomed to the small town life, especially with all its whimsy, she has a caring heart when it comes to animals. Watching her courage and confidence spark including finding a place where she can peacefully belong makes City Girl, Country Vet an enjoyable read.

Must Be Love (2010)

In the 2nd installment of Talyton St George and it must be love that possibly makes the city vet Maz to be contented with her new country life. Her vet practice with her best friend Emma is thriving as well as her relationship with the handsome Alex Fox-Gifford.

However, circumstances make Emma take a short break from the practice and soon Maz life is spinning out of control. She finds herself working long hours to try to keep things running smooth, while on the other hand she continuously receives insults from Alex parents, she has to keep a watchful eye on the lusty locum who has been causing trouble amongst the village girls as well as Emma’s troubled mental state. However, after Maz receives unwelcome news only time can tell whether Alex and Maz love can withstand heartbreaks.

You will like Maz, she seems a lovely person, and she is someone that you would want to associate. It is evidently clear that she is passionate about animals more than anything else in her life. Additionally, there are many other characters such as Izzy serving at Otter House, other pet owners, who bring out the best part of the novel. Everyone in the novel makes their impact, ranging from the pet owners to the pets themselves even though there are other wider characters.

The Sweetest Thing (2011)

The Sweetest Thing is the third installment in the heartwarming series by Cathy Woodman. The book is about a divorced mother of three who starts baking services and finds out that animals are not terrifying and she can get on her own and finally discovers that she would rather have a man to share her troubles.

Jennie Copeland thought she had the knowledge of a successful life recipe- her marriage to her university lover was thriving; she had a safe house and three children. Things changed when her husband decided to leave and forced to seek a different recipe.

She finds a shelter in a neglected house on the outskirts of the beautiful Talyton St. George, a new baking business, a horse, chickens and a dog. However, the life in this setting is not quite what she expected. Jennie cannot help but wonder whether her neighbor Guy Barnes was right when he told her that she would not last a year, or maybe probably she is missing a crucial ingredient to make the perfect recipe for her new life. Alternatively, probably Guy Barnes could be the missing ingredient?

The Sweetest Thing is a fun, and enjoyable read with no highly flow ideas. It is a perfect read when on the beach, waiting for the tickets, or before the movie begins, or even when in line for the dentist office, simply because it is simple to pick up again even without losing track of what had transpired or what character met whom.

You will love Jennie’s character, even though at times she tends to respond to things and thoughts in a way that leads her into trouble.

Cathy Woodman has woven Talyton St George series in such a way that you will love the country life it presents. Even though Talyton St George is indeed a fictional village, you will quite easily relate it to a real place you know. You will find yourself imagining of the Otter House, all the shops, including even the Manor building where Fox Giffords work.

The characters in the series have been uniquely crafted, and each aspect revealed in such a manner that it fits the character role in the book. The plot development is fantastic for all the books such that you will keep on perusing through lines to find out what happens next.
