Publication Order of Short Stories/Novellas

Author Steve McHugh was born in Mexborough, South Yorkshire (which is a little village). Steve started writing when he was very young. The first story that he ever finished writing was violent and had bad language. It was part of an English lesson and after his teacher read it, he had to talk to the head of the year about it. The next story he would write got him an A, it was much less violent and had better language. A decade later, he would start writing full length novels.

He writes the “Hellequin Chronicles” series, it is Urban Fantasy that is set in modern day London. The first of these books (which is called “Crimes Against Magic”) which was released in the year 2012. This was also his debut novel.

“Crimes Against Magic” is the first novel in the “Hellequin Chronicles” series and was released in the year 2012. Nathan Garrett woke up on a cold floor in a warehouse, with nothing but a sword and a gun. He had no idea where he was or how he got there. He had one clue: just a piece of paper with his name on it. Ten years have gone by since then.

He found out, in the time since, that he is a powerful sorcerer and has used these skills to work as a thief for hire. He has always tried to find out his true identity, and those that wiped his memory have been hunting for him ever since.

The barricade that is holding his past hostage starts to come crashing down, he plans on protecting a young girl that is key to the plans of his enemy. His enemy is closing in and everyone he loves is a target. It makes Nathan have to choose between the life buried deep inside and the life he has built.

Fans of the novel like the way the protagonist is unique and one that tries to stand out from all the rest that has ever been seen before. Some liked both of the two time lines, feeling that they both had a fast pace. This book surprised some with simply how good it was. Fans hope that the rest of the series was as good as this one was.

“Born of Hatred” is the second novel in the “Hellequin Chronicles” series and was released in the year 2012. It used to be that Nathan Garrett was a feared man. Mentioning his name would make his enemies stop right in their tracks. That was a long time ago.

Nathan’s friend asks him for help looking into a pattern of awful crimes, he hesitantly agrees. This investigation of his leads to a serial killer, one that is something more or less than human. It is a creature that is simply hatred and malevolence.

There are certain things that a sixteen hundred year old sorcerer is reluctant to take on. Evil makes a target out of those people Nathan cares about. It will make his enemies know who he used to be. It will make them learn to fear him again.

Fans of the novel felt that they could not put it down for very long, and finished it in just two days time. Some felt that this was better than book one, as the author is able to expand on his universe that he created and develop Nathan even more this time around. Readers cannot wait to get their hands on more from this wonderful series.

“With Silent Screams” is the third novel in the “Hellequin Chronicles” series and was released in the year 2014. Hellequin or Nathan Garrett, he is known as both. Killing one of his friends and trying to blow him up. Both are good ways to get his undivided attention.

There is an explosion that almost kills Nathan, a cryptic note, and his friend’s corpse throw Nate right into a mystery. It involves a brand new threat from an old foe of Nate’s. He must put together the pieces of an emerging pattern that involves tattooed murder victims, a mysterious alchemist, a locked up madman, and a crazy plot to take the throne of Shadow Falls’ (a realm that is hidden and the power of Avalon’s rival).

Can Nate stop the impending slaughter or will he be the next to fall in the clandestine war?

Fans of the novel felt that this was so vivid it could almost be made into a movie. Each and every time, the books take things up another notch, and are better than the one that came before it. This is a series that readers follow and will continue to follow even after all the books have been released. Some readers cannot help but praise the series enough. No matter which book it is, it is hard for readers to put it down until they have read the entire thing.

“Prison of Hope” is the fourth novel in the “Hellequin Chronicles” series and was released in the year 2015. A long time ago, Pandora was imprisoned by Olympian gods, inside a human named Hope. By doing so, the made a creature that had only two things to do: chaos and death. They had remorse and locked her away in Tartarus (which is ruled by Hades).

Centuries later and Pandora has escaped. Nate Garrett is sent after her. He finds out about a plan to disrupt the Berlin Olympic Games (which were held in 1936). This, in a quest for vengeance that is misplaced.

Fast forward to today, in Berlin. Nate has said that he would act as one of the guardians on a school trip going to Germany to see Hades at Tartarus’ entrance. Titan King Cronus becomes only the second to ever escape from Tartarus. This makes Nate have to find and bring him back, so that a civil war between anyone who would want to benefit from his escaping can be avoided.

Fans of the novel felt that yet again, the author does a wonderful job giving readers more of the story; yet at the same time, making them come back for more of it in future books. Some feel that this is a high quality series that has nothing but great characters they love catching up with and spending time reading about.
