The British writer Steve McHugh hails from Mexborough in the United Kingdom, and has been writing for quite some time now. Largely known for his science-fiction and fantasy stories, he has been able to craft a highly successful writing career from these particular genres. Making them his own, he also has a variety of highly lucrative franchises and series set within this particular field as well, each with their own unique characters inhabiting them. One particular series is that of the ongoing ‘Hellequin Chronicles’ which is also set within the world of fantasy and the paranormal. Following Nathan Garrett it manages to create a fully three-dimensional character with its chief leading protagonist. Investigating crimes of the supernatural variety, he was once a powerful fighter who was feared by many, but now he has to regain that title over the course of the series.

With over seven books in the series so far and counting, the franchise really is a colorful and exciting one packed with action. Starting back in 2012 it has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time, building a loyal legion of fans as it goes. Containing ongoing arcs and narratives as well, there’s plenty to get involved in for both newcomers and fans of the author alike.

Crimes Against Magic

Brought out through the ‘Hidden Realms Publishing’ label in 2012 on the 27th of April, this was to be the first in the ongoing ‘Hellequin Chronicles’ series of novels. Introducing the character of Nathan Garrett for the first time, it also sets up and establishes the world that he inhabits. Developing the style and the tone of the titles to follow, it manages to provide a clear idea of what to expect in the books to follow.

Working as an ‘urban fantasy’, McHugh manages to create a sense of realism within the narrative unlike any other. Making the story believable, despite its fantastical underpinnings, he uses very realistic and contemporary issues to formulate the story. This also allows him to make his voice heard, speaking on larger day-to-day issues facing modern society as well. Featuring the character of one Nathan Garrett in its lead role, it follows his progress through modern-day London, England. Not only that, but he’s a centuries old sorcerer who must come to terms with the true extent of the powers at his disposal. Also using flashbacks through the centuries, it manages to retain a sense of scope to its chronology throughout as well. Set in London in England the story really makes the most of its location, being a resolutely British story in both tone and style. Knowing and understanding the story, McHugh clearly has an affinity for the setting, as seen in his descriptive language used throughout. Giving the reader a clear idea of the city, it really allows them feel as if they are actually there involved in the story itself.

Almost ten years have passed since Nathan Garrett woke up with amnesia holding only a gun and a sword, along with a slip of paper with his name on. Discovering he has powers as a sorcerer he’s become a thief for hire in order to get by, all whilst searching for his true identity and past. Those that left him out cold with amnesia on that warehouse floor have never stopped hunting for him either, and it’s soon time for him to choose between his present and his past. Can he discover who he truly is? Does he really want to find out? Who will commit crimes against magic?

Born Of Hatred

Released through the ‘Hidden Realms Publishing’ label once again, this book carries directly on from where the last left off. Marking the second title in the ongoing ‘Hellequin Chronicles’ series of books, it manages to develop the many narrative arcs and overall story as a whole. It also works at offering some new twists and turns along the way, keeping the readers guessing right until the very end.

Once again taking very realistic issues an placing them into an other-worldly setting, McHugh speaks on the current issues of the day. Whether he’s writing about ancient demonic forces, or thousand year old sorcerers, he makes the story itself easy to relate to for the reader. Dealing with very real human horror, as well as fantasy horror, he expands upon the many ideas and themes that came previously. Using Nathan Garrett as its leading character once more as well, it picks up from where he was last left off, as it continues through his perspective. Having developed the character and his personality from the previous novel, it manages to take the action forwards along with his development. Building upon his arc, McHugh takes a more in-depth look at who he is and what his place in the world throughout history has been and, currently, is. Set in London once more as well, it immediately brings the reader back to the city, allowing them to instantly pick-up from where they last left off. A character in its own right, McHugh makes the most of it like before, whilst also expanding upon it, in both its sense of scope and scale. This also allows the story itself to be built upon, creating a wider sense of grandiose drama for the narrative throughout.

Once feared, now seemingly forgotten, Nathan Garrett continues to fight against the forces of darkness that shadow the world. Looking to investigate a spate of murders at the bequest of his friend, he soon finds himself up against a serial killer that might not be human, so much as a force of pure hatred and evil. That’s when the killer starts to threaten those close to Nathan, and it is time once again to prove why he was once so feared. Will he be able to stop the serial killer? Where will the killer strike next? Can he defeat that which is born of hatred?

The Hellequin Chronicles Series

A powerful and exciting set of books, this ongoing series is an excellent example of its genre and the form. Giving a strong leading protagonist who is also entirely human at the same time, it manages to create a compelling and enticing narrative throughout. With plenty of room to expand in the years to come, this is a series that will continue to grow from strength-to-strength for some time yet.

   I dont understand if i missed a book, i listen on audio books, book 6 Promise of Wrath ended abruptly on chapter 36. book 7 starts after Arther has woken up and they are out from that realm, with no explanation realy in book 7. have i lost chapters in book 6 or missed a whole book?

     Very odd – not sure what happened there but I looked up reviews of the audiobook and am not seeing anyone mention it ending abruptly etc.
