Gillian Larkin is a United Kingdom bestselling author of mystery novels and a resident of Yorkshire, England. The author started reading books at a tender age, her favorite fiction detective being, Poirot. Larkin is also an avid fan of the television series, Murder She Wrote. She became a published novelist in 2013 when Virtually Scared to Death, the first book in Julia Blake Cozy Mystery was published. Since then, Larkin has authored over ten series. In 2016, she published an omnibus, Mystery Stories-Selection Box Set.

Virtually Scared to Death

Virtually Scared to Death is book one in Julia Blake Murder Mystery by Gillian Larkin. It introduces us to Julia Blame, an independent young woman running her own cleaning business. The first time to encounter a dead body is the day that she finds one of her clients named Mark Castle dead on the floor of his apartment. It rings in her mind that Mark had mentioned to her a few things before his death, things that he was worried about. Next to Mark’s body is a bottle of pills but the pills are not his usual ones. Could this be a suicide or murder, which someone is trying to cover? Moreover, why is Mark’s game playing a continuous game? It soon becomes clear to Julia that Mark did not commit suicide but was murdered. He was indeed a true friend, and she is determined to find the person who killed him.
Virtually Scared to Death is a murder mystery, which is fun and captivating to read right from the first page to the last. Julia discovers a dead body, and when the cops show up, they are fast to rule out that it was suicide without even examining the crime scene. However, Julia’s instincts tell her that this could be murder staged to appear as a suicide.

A Deadly Restoration

In the second book in Julia Blake murder mystery, we are introduced to Leo Kennedy, one of Julia’s newest neighbors in the hood. Leo is having restoration work done to his house and for the short time that he has lived there; he has managed to upset some of his neighbors and builders as well.
So one night, Julia, the amateur sleuth hears the sound of something breaking next door. Her curiosity leads her to investigate, and she makes a shocking discovery, she finds Leo lifeless body on the floor of his front room, and according to Julia’s amateur sleuth skills, it is no accident, Leo had been murdered.
Detective Investigator Clarke is assigned to the case and discovers Leo Kennedy had accumulated for himself an endless list of enemies, many of whom had intentions of seeing him dead as well. However, who could have had the guts to kill Leo? Moreover, for what reasons? Soon, Julia soon joins Clarke in investigating Leo’s death and soon she her amateur sleuth skills proves to be worth it and crucial after she spots a lead that leads to the arrest of the killer.

The Final Bet

The Final Bet is the first book in Second-Hand Ghosts by Gillian Larkin. It is a cozy mystery story about a ghost who needs help. In this book, we are introduced to Rose the owner of a shop known as Second Hand Rose. Not all the visitors to this shop are human or alive, and some of them are ghosts. These ghosts often approach Rose to lend them a helping hand with their unfinished business here on earth. Then there is Kate who works alongside Rose but is not aware of the ghost’s presence, and neither does her friend disclose to her about them until the day Rose ask for help from Kate. However, Kate does not accept her friend’s request for help since she has a young kid and doesn’t want ghosts or any other entity hanging around her.

However something happens, that leaves Kate with no other choice but to help the ghost that requires her assistance. In this first installment, Kate assists a ghost who into a dangerous situation simply because he could not resist a final bet.

The Lost Baby

The Lost Baby picks up from where The Final Bet, the first book in the series left off. The founder and the owner of Second Hand Rose, Rose has died. Before her death, she had requested Kate to help her with her other side business of providing a helping to ghosts who require help. In this second book, a ghost is seeking help to find its lost baby. It is revealed that the ghost was told that its baby had died during birth- but thinks that there is more to that narrative. Kate is so upset by what befell on the ghost, how could someone hide the truth, more so when it comes to life? How could someone steal a mother’s true love? However, what Kate does not have any idea and is also not aware of the tragedy that she is about to discover.

A Lonely Death

A Lonely Death is the first book in Pearl And Derek Mysteries by Gillian Larkin. The book introduces two main characters, Derek, an elderly gentleman who has the abilities to see the ghost of people who were murdered. In his ghostly activities, Derek is frequently assisted by his ghostly sidekick, Pearl, a ghost who investigates on the killers.

During his first ever investigative mission, Derek encounters a ghost named Eric Malone. Both Eric and Derek trace their friendship right from the school days, the times when Derek was constantly bullied by Eric mercilessly. However, now Eric has come into Derek’s life once again, but this time he desperately wants his help. Derek soon discovers that Eric has never transformed and is a bully as he was back in the days and there is more than just one person who could be a culprit.

A Lonely Death is one of the best paranormal ghost’s cozies you will ever read. The characters in the story are funny, likable, quirky and quite determined. You will love the interaction between Derek and his ghost friend, Pearl. The action and the mystery in the story will keep you turning pages.

   I noticed a lot of your series seem to stop around 2017. Do you have any new books coming out? Are you still writing? Under a different name? Thank you. I really liked Julie.
