Largely known for writing in a highly intimate style, the American author Karen Karbo is world renowned for writing novels that are both genuine and easy to relate to on a universal level, as she draws her readers in, ultimately allowing them to feel as if she is directly talking to them, something which has been commented by numerous critics and fellow authors on multiple occasions. Writing about subjects that are close to her heart, she really allows her prose to come alive off of the page, along with her characters who also feel extremely well realized. This has given her a global platform to speak about subjects that she feels fully invested in, giving her voice a highly realistic sense of honesty and authenticity in the process. Taking the time to get to know each and everyone of her subjects, she really invests herself in her novels, giving them a sense of immediacy which will ensure their timelessness for many years to come. Creating narratives that draw from her own life, she combines both fact and fiction, writing both memoirs and non-fiction, as well as fictional novels as well. Writing for all ages, she has made herself and her work extremely accessible to a very wide-ranging audience, writing for both children and adults. This has taken the form of mystery novels, many of which have gone on to gain a worldwide following of their own, as she has shown a gift for creating compelling story-lines that really bring the reader in, keeping them there whilst constantly guessing throughout. Her characters are also fully three-dimensional in the sense that they are brought to life off of the page, speaking to the readers on their own terms almost. Creating series of her own as well, Karbo has amassed a worldwide following of readers from all across the globe, which is something that will continue for quite some time to come.
Early and Personal Life
Born and raised within the vicinity of Los Angeles in California, she would capitalize on many of her experiences growing up in the southern region of California for much of her literary career to follow. Growing up with a strong passion for both reading as well as writing, she would come to harness a keen interest in writing both fiction and non-fiction in the following years to come. Later moving to Portland from Los Angeles, she would again use the upheaval to inspire much of her work, something which she continues to this very day.
Writing Career
It would be in 1990 that the writer Karen Karbo would release her first fictional stand-alone novel with the title ‘Trespassers Welcome Here’. She would later follow this up with her second novel, ‘The Diamond Lane’, in 1991 the following year, along with the series ‘Minerva Clark Mysteries’, which begun in 2005 with the novel ‘Minerva Clark Gets a Clue’. Winning numerous awards and acclaim over the course of her long and illustrious writing career, she has been nominated for many prestigious awards, such as the ‘New York Times Notable Book of the Year’ for her debut novel upon the year of its release in 1990, which she won. Continuing to write to this very day, she has plenty more novels and non-fictional titles planned upon the horizon, something which she’ll be carrying on into the foreseeable future for some time to come.
Minerva Clark Gives Up the Ghost
Initially brought out through the ‘Bloomsbury USA Children’s’ publishing outlet, this would mark the third title in the ongoing ‘Minerva Clark’ collection of mystery novels. Primarily aimed at children, these would be fun and entertaining stories that the whole family could enjoy, with their entertaining a light-hearted style of approach. Combining mystery with elements of the supernatural, they really bring the reader in, providing a sense of escapism and fun in the process.
Being a part of a long-running series that was already underway, this manages to capitalize on the many ideas and themes that came before, whilst also adding to them too. Developing the character of Minerva Clark, it really works at taking her character forwards, as it allows her personality to shine for the reader. The locations are also used extremely well too, as Karbo builds upon the atmosphere, giving it an ethereal supernatural edge, whilst simultaneously keeping it rooted in reality.
Returning with a new husband, the yoga-instructor mother of the eponymous teenage sleuth Minerva Clark turns up surprising her. Not only that, but it appears that there’s a supernatural entity within their midst, as a local grocery store is looking to find their missing ghost. Before Clark is able to find it though, it appears that she must find out who burnt the store down, and, hopefully, bring the arsonist to justice. Will she manage it? Can she find the ghost itself? What then happens when Minerva Clark gives up the ghost?
The Diamond Lane
Originally brought out in 1991 through the Overlook Books publishing label, this would be one of the earlier entries in Karen Karbo’s backlog of work, thus setting it up as a must for any fan looking to find out more on where she has come from as an author. Working as a stand-alone, this provides more of a ‘slice-of-life’ style of storytelling, dealing with relationships and families, and how they interact with one another. Showing the progression of her voice as an author ultimately, it really manages to bring to the forefront Karbo as a rising talent, this being her second novel.
Centered around the character of one Mouse Fitzhenry, it sees her returning after sixteen years in Africa working and operating as a filmmaker there. Returning home she finds her mother is all set to move in with her new boyfriend Tony, something which threatens to turn Mouse’s whole world upside down. Not just that, but she must also contend with the attraction she still feels to her old flame Ivan, as well as dealing with the fact that both Tony and Ivan intend to make a film about her life. How will it turn out? Will she cope with it all? What will happen on the Diamond Lane?
