Kim Newman is a reputed English novelist, journalist, and film critic. He is well known for writing science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories. Recurring interests of Newman that are usually seen in his work include horror fiction and film history. He attributes his interests to seeing Dracula by Tod Browning when he was eleven years old. Some of the most popular book series penned by Newman include the Anno Dracula series The Diogenes Club series, and the Drearcliff Grange series. Besides these, he has also penned several short story collections, comics, and standalone novels in his career. Some of his works have been published under the pen name of Jack Yeovil. Newman has won several prestigious awards in his writing career, including the Bram Stoker Award, the BSFA award, and the International Horror Guild Award.

Author Newman was born as Kim James Newman on July 31, 1959, in London. His parents, Julia Newman and Bryan Newman, were potters by profession. Newman was brought up in Aller, Somerset. He completed his schooling from Dr. Morgan’s Grammar School located in Bridgwater and later obtained a degree in English Literature from the Sussex University. Newman wrote an experimental semi-autobiography called Life’s Lottery in 1999, which is set in a fictional town that resembles Sedgwater. In the same year, he also wrote a short story called Angel Down, Sussex, which is set in the area surrounding Sussex University. Newman started his career in the field of journalism and worked for magazines like Knave and City Limits. His first two attempts at writing were in the nonfiction genre. His book, Ghastly Beyond Belief, was written in collaboration with a friend named Neil Gaiman in 1985. This was followed by a few other nonfiction works in the next few years, mostly based on horror movies.

In 1988, Newman teamed up with Stephen Jones to edit a horror called Horror: 100 Best Books. He also edited its 2005 sequel, Another 100 Best Books. Both these books contain 100 essays about 100 horror novels written by an equal number of horror writers. They were also the winners of the Bram Stoker prize in the category of the Best Non-Fiction. Newman works as a contributing editor in the UK based film magazine called Empire. He also writes a monthly segment for the magazine, in which he provides his personal views on the recently released horror films. Newman also contributes to review sites such as Rotten Tomatoes, Video Watchdog, Venue, Sight & Sound, etc. He has been chosen to write Doctor Who’s novelization in the BFI’s book series based on TV Classics.

In 2018, he was appointed as the chief writer for BBC Four’s documentary series called Mark Kermode’s Secrets of the Cinema. Through his popular works, Newman has attained the reputation of an expert on sci-fi and horror cinema. His books draw on the tropes of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy promiscuously. Newman is considered to be irreverently and complexly referential. One of the features of Newman’s fiction stories is his interest in reinterpreting historical personalities, particularly belonging to the entertainment industry. Over the years, Newman has collaborated with many writers, including Paul McAuley, Eugene, Stephen Jones, etc. He has also written scripts for radio and has worked on many film projects. His other contributions include writing for DVD releases along with liner notes and audio commentaries. Newman has been invited as a guest at many film festivals and conventions. Currently, Newman resides in Islington, London.

Initially, it is depicted that Queen Victoria has married again. Her new husband is the Wallachian Prince named Vlad Tepes, who is infamous as Count Dracula. This book is filled with familiar characters from the Victorian era. The story mainly follows Charles Beauregard and Genevieve Dieudonne as they try to solve the mystery behind the Ripper murders. This novel is a rich, panoramic tale that combines horror, mystery, romance, and politics. Author Newman’s efforts to create a compelling and unique story of alternate history has turned out to be a quite interesting one. Newman has explored the darkest depths of Victorian London very well.

The sequel to the first novel of this series is entitled ‘The Bloody Red Baron’. It was also published by Titan Books in 2012, following its first publishing in 1995. This book takes place in 1918. Initially, Graf von Dracula is introduced as the chief commander of the armies of Austria-Hungary and Germany. The ongoing Great War in Europe is not only happening amongst the living, but also between the humans and the undead. Charles Beauregard gets caught up in this conflict with his protege named Edwin Winthrop and an adventurous and fearless vampire reporter named Kate Reed. Being a Dracula’s old enemy, Charles Beauregard engages in a battle with the deadly vampire flying machine called the Bloody Red Baron. He is supported by his companions Kate Reed and Edwin Winthrop, in this effort. On the other hand, Genevieve Dieudonne returns to England and infiltrates a vampire gathering to fetch important information. This novel also received great support and liking by the readers and became widely successful. The critics and reviewers spoke praising words about the book’s characters, storyline, and the writing style of author Newman. This novel’s success motivated Newman to develop a few more interesting stories in this historical fiction/horror series.
