Stephenie Meyer and Suzanne Collins – authors of “The Twilight Series” and “The Hunger Games Trilogy,” respectively – are not the only authors to read when it comes to books for young readers. Veronica Roth is emerging as a prominent and best-selling author in her own right. “The Divergent Trilogy,” as it is known, is Veronica Roth’s first set of novels that have already made it to the New York Times Best Sellers list. Ask an adult if she has heard of Veronica Roth and the response may not be immediate. However, ask a teenager and the answer is sure to be a definite “yes.” Most adults find however, that after reading just one of Veronica Roth’s novels, they, too, have found characters they can identify with, and a story that is both captivating and intriguing.

Veronica Roth wrote her first novel, “Divergent” while studying creative writing at Northwestern University in Illinois. She was born on August 19, 1988 and grew up in the Chicago suburb of Barrington, Illinois. At her young age, Veronica Roth is no stranger to social media and she uses it to reach her ever-growing group of readers all over the world. Her Facebook page has over 34,000 “likes.” She uses Twitter and makes appearances at events such as Comic Con in San Diego and lends her story-telling expertise and life experiences as a keynote speaker at various events. She has her own website, veronicarothbooks.com, and can also be found on blogger.com. It is surely due to her accessible nature and her desire to connect with her readers that she has gained such a following. When seen in live interviews – which can be viewed on YouTube – Veronica Roth comes across as intelligent and down-to-earth. She takes the time to thoughtfully answer each question like she is engaging in a conversation rather than an interview. With her friendly nature and pleasant personality, Veronica Roth is almost her own agent – managing and promoting her work – because it is honestly what completes her as a person.

Her first novel, “Divergent,” debuted at #6 on the New York Times Best Sellers List. She was named the GoodReads Choice Award Winner in 2011 and the winner of the GoodReads Favorite Book Award in the same year. Remarkably, Roth sold the film rights to “Divergent” before the book even hit the shelves. In 2012, she again won an award – this time it was the GoodReads Best Young Adult Fantasy and Science Fiction award. “Divergent” stayed on the list for over 12 weeks and also was #1 on New York Times Best Sellers Paperback list.

Veronica Roth’s books are categorized as “dystopian novels.” For someone who is unfamiliar with the term “dystopian,” it is perhaps easiest to explain by saying that it is the opposite of “utopian.” A utopian society is a perfect one, where people live in harmony with each other and nature. A dystopian society is one which is imaginary, where the world is faced with destruction, disease, corruption and fear. Its leaders are cruel and the inhabitants must deal with limited resources, unhappiness and despair just to make it through an average day. In Veronica Roth’s first novel, “Divergent,” the reader meets the main character, Beatrice Prior. She is a young teenager who lives in a ravaged area of Chicago which is divided into five “factions.” Each faction represents a specific virtue that all members pledge to uphold. The virtues are honesty, selflessness, bravery, peacefulness, and intelligence. At the tender age of sixteen, Beatrice, and other sixteen-year-olds like her, must choose a faction which they will devote the rest of their lives. Their choices are celebrated with initiations. Beatrice changes her name to “Tris,” and is faced with the difficult decision of remaining with her family or dedicating herself to who she truly believes she is. She also has a secret which she has kept hidden because it could mean death to her, or if used wisely, it might actually save her loved ones. Of course the story would not be complete without her young love interest and friend, named “Four.” It is their emotional struggle in this torn society that tests their courage, strength and beliefs. It is this journey taken by these strong characters that hooks the reader and makes these engaging books an easy, quick read.

In addition to “Divergent”, Veronica Roth’s second novel in the trilogy, “Insurgent,” was equally well-received and highly anticipated. It did not disappoint her dedicated fans. Countdowns can be seen for her third book, “Allegiant” on all of her websites and Facebook page. It is due out in stores on October 22, 1013. She has also written two other “Divergent” off-shoots or short stories based on events that happened in the original “Divergent” novel as told by the character, “Four.” For instance, one such short story focuses on Chapter 13 of “Divergent.” Roth often thinks about how the other characters in a particular event might be feeling. She has stated she wanted to explore some of these events from Four’s perspective. Her readers often send her emails or comments on what they would like to see her explore in her books. Veronica Roth has also written a short story not specifically related to the famed trilogy, that is included in a collection of other dystopian stories from various authors entitled, “Shards and Ashes.” There is even a trilogy collection due out in early 2014.

The new movie “Divergent” is getting its share of attention. With entertainment magazines promoting it on their covers, it is almost impossible to miss. The movie even earned a coveted promotion on the MTV Video Music Awards on August 25, 2013. It stars Theo James as “Four” and Shailene Woodley as “Tris”. It also stars Miles Teller. These young, attractive and talented new stars are sure to be popular among teenage viewers. Hopefully they will reprise their roles for the remaining movies of the trilogy. Merchandise is just beginning to surface with t-shirts bearing the movie’s catch-phrase, “One Choice Will Define You.”

It is hard not to admire Veronica Roth as she is truly a gifted writer. Considering that she is just beginning, one can only expect that she will have many more marvelous stories to come. Her stories will continue to captivate readers, sending them on adventures that exist only in imaginations. She can be proud that she has produced such thought-provoking writing that will encourage young adults to examine and question the world they live in.
