Author Geraldine was born on June 6, 1951, in London. She was brought up in North London and was the youngest of the 3 three children born to her parents. Initially, Geraldine developed an interest in studying teaching, but later, her focus shifted towards writing. Geraldine claims that the desire to escape the unsatisfactory world increases her love for writing. Her motto about the field of writing is that one should not write about what they know, but about what they want to know. The literary works of author Geraldine include the retellings of classic children’s stories such as El Cid, The Pilgrim’s Progress, The Odyssey, Moby Dick, The Canterbury Tales, Gilgamesh, and One Thousand and One Arabian Nights. All the rights to Peter Pan were given to the Great Ormound Street Hospital by J.M. Barrie in 1929. In 2004, the hospital announced a competition for finding the author who would go on to write Peter Pan’s sequel. This competition was won by Geraldine after she submitted a synopsis along with a sample chapter.
A couple of years later, the sequel novel was published internationally. The Oxford University Press released it in the UK and Simon & Schuster published it in the US. Following the successful release of this book, Geraldine went on to write many more exciting fiction novels for children, including Plundering Paradise, The Kite Rider, and The Stones Are Hatching. Geraldine has also penned 6 historical novels for adult readers. The prominent ones among them include Lovesong, The Ideal Wife, The Maypole, and Fire’s Astonishment. In 2013, she started an online book called A Thousand Kinds of Ugly based on the myth of Hylas & Hercules. In 2004, Geraldine was the British nominee for the international biennial Hans Christian Andersen Award for her lifetime contribution to children’s books. This is the highest recognition given to children’s book creators on the international level.
Geraldine was also elected as Canterbury Christ Church University’s Honorary fellow in 2006 as well as an English Association’s Fellow in 2010. Also in 2010, Geraldine was elected as a Royal Society of Literature Fellow. Author Geraldine is the winner of two of the most prestigious children’s book awards of England, the Guardian Prize, and the Carnegie Medal. Additionally, she has won many other national and international book awards. Between 1988 and 2018, Geraldine’s name was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal for a record 8 times. She is also one of the only 8 writers who have won this popular award two times since it was created in 1936. As of today, Geraldine resides in Berkshire with her loving husband John. She continues to write from the comfort of her home and is currently busy writing the latest book of her writing career. She is expected to publish it soon for her fans to read and enjoy. Critics often label Geraldine’s novels as emotionally thunderous and extraordinary.
An exciting anthology series written by author Geraldine McCaughrean is known as the Heroes series. It consists of powerful stories about the four Greek legends, Theseus, Odysseus, Hercules, and Perseus. A popular book of this series is entitled ‘Odysseus’. It was first released in 2003 and re-released by Cricket Books in 2004. The book opens by showing that Odysseus manages to narrowly escape along with his loyal troops, several life-threatening risks. They include being eaten alive by Cyclops, transformed into pigs by Circe, and shipwrecked by Charybdis and Scylla. Odysseus’ company is required to go on a journey to Hell and come back, dodge the pursuit of the Poseidon, and cross the oceans to return home. Meanwhile, in Greece, Odysseus’ beautiful wife, Penelope, struggles to keep the greedy suitors away and prevent them from taking the throne that rightfully belongs to her husband. This novel is filled with romance, excitement, and great characters. It is perfect for the readers who have an interest in knowing more about the Greek heroes.
Another exciting book of this series is known as ‘Theseus’. It was also published by Cricket Books in 2005, after its initial publication in 1997. The story of this novel revolves around the life and struggles of Theseus, another Greek hero. Initially, Theseus is introduced as a humble country boy, who sets off on a journey to Athen. He looks forward to meeting his father, Athen’s king, and claim the right of being the rightful heir to his father’s throne. During the journey, he faces several obstacles, but uses his strength and intelligence to overcome each one of them. Several obstacles surpassed by Theseus include battles with trolls, giants, Crommyonian Boar, etc. The pride of Theseus grows with each of his triumphs. In one of the battles, Theseus ends up killing a giant bull that was Poseidon’s favorite. This brings havoc in Athens.
In order to bring back the peace, Poseidon asks Athens’ rulers to arrange a gruesome meal and a mortal lady for the son of Poseidon’s bull called Minotaur. Theseus takes it upon himself to fight Minotaur, defeat him, and make Athens peaceful again. This book is filled with action-packed sequences and describes the struggles of Theseus very well. Geraldine has done a wonderful job by writing this novel to help the readers understand the concepts of true love and trust. The book is particularly relevant to the younger generation. It was highly appreciated by readers in all corners of the world. The book’s success motivated Geraldine to go on to write many more novels in the later years.
