Meljean Brook is an urban fantasy and paranormal romance author from Portland Oregon. The popular author is best known for her “The Guardians” and “Iron Seas” series of novels and several collections of short stories. Meljean loves to say that she was a child that brought up deep in the woods, where she would hide under the blankets reading romance, comic books and fairy tales at night. She then grew up and spent several years working as the manager of a construction company doing bookkeeping, payroll, and accounting while writing fan fiction on the side. Brook then quit her accounting job to pursue her first love of writing when she realized that she was better at crafting stories. She believes that she needed to be writing happily ever afters, superheroes and monsters rather than reading about them and hence set out to become a full-time author with the publishing of “Demon Angel” her first paranormal romance in 2007. She currently lives with her daughter and husband in Portland Oregon.

Meljean had always been a voracious reader and always found time to write during her free time. She believed she could write as a hobby when she got a job but she could not have been more wrong. In time she found herself having to quickly close her tabs and go to a payroll spreadsheet when her boss walked in on her writing fan fiction. It was then that she knew something had to change and quit her job and enrolled for a master’s program to study for an English degree. She was hoping to write literary fiction though her heart lay with fantasy fiction and it was not long before she was writing romantic fantasy with a paranormal twist. Brook wrote a lot of fan fiction based on the DC universe which was quite an important step that led to her becoming a published author. With so many works online, she was noticed by an editor who contacted her and asked for any manuscripts she had written. Luckily, she had something ready to go and a few weeks later she submitted her novel which would be published as “Demon Angel” her debut. She credits the fanfiction community for not only helping her get an editor but also helping to build her confidence and improve her writing by offering support and critiques of her work.

Maljean Brook’s “The Guardian” series and the “Iron Seas” series are works of literature that combine romance and the paranormal to make for a variation of steampunk. However, since Brook has always loved romance, almost all her novels have some element of romance at the core of their stories. They do not fit snugly in the paranormal romance genre though they are a better fit in perhaps the urban fantasy romance. Her novels are characterized by a little bit of humor and some darker elements while also touching on aspects of belief and morality. Maljean draws her fiction from many sources though the works of Milton and particularly “Paradise Lost” were a significant influence. In fact, she has said that Oscar Wilde and “Pride and Prejudice” hung in the background while she was penning her second novel, “Demon Moon.” She also draws from action movies, classic stories such as “Jane Eyre” and “Yellow Wallpaper” and the amazing collection of Vietnam stories by Tim O’Brien. As for influences that she cannot specifically reference in her novels, she counts the likes of “Unicorn” for heroism and a unique villain and the sacrifices and relationships of Jaenelle of the “Black Jewels Trilogy.”

“Demon Angel” by Meljean Brooks is the story of Hugh and Lilith. Thousands of years ago Hugh was a knight full of ideals while Lilith the demon-human hybrid had not yet given her life in a deal with the devil. Now a millennium into the deal, she is given to the mission to ensure that hell-bound souls die and go where they belong in as little time as possible. For her master, it would be even better if she could get a good guy on the road to hell. When she meets Hugh, she sees him as another opportunity to lead another astray. But it is not long before she is taken by his charisma. But he is not falling for any of her tricks and remains unflappable and unpredictable. When her plans to make him fall to the devil fail, he ends up as a Guardian fighting for Team Angel. Their dalliance now turns into an eighth-century courtship that has them fighting all the time. While they cannot seem to get along, there is undeniable chemistry between them and the longer they play the games the more they fall for each other. Hugh is now a fallen man and decides to live out the rest of his life but he wants to free Lilith first. Ultimately, she has to make the choice between saving her own soul or the man she loves.

“Demon Moon,” the second novel of “The Guardians” series is the story of a vampire and Savi a human. Colin is a two-century-old vampire who is characterized by an incredibly vain streak. He looks are angelic and this also contributes to his arrogance and confidence. But while he is so vain he was cursed that he cannot look at himself in a mirror. He had a blood pact with his brother and the process had gone wrong thus messing up his transformation into a vampire. They had unknowingly used a sword with magical properties and this means that unlike his peers he cannot transform humans into vampires or feed on them without killing them first. Savi his love interest is the adopted child of a former Guardian named Hugh Castleford that has had several run-ins with Colin though he had married a demon. Savi looks like someone with no direction in life though she is a computer whizz. Since she had promised to get married to the man her grandmother would choose for her, she thinks that she could never have a love-filled marriage like what her parents had. As such, she decides to have a fling with Colin a sexy vampire who makes her palms sweat and her heart race. Their feelings cannot be denied but it is a relationship that looks to be doomed right from the start.

“Demon Night,” the third novel of “The Guardian” series by Meljean Brook is set 140 years since Ethan signed up to be a guardian protecting humans and fighting demons. When some group targets the seemingly fragile but lovely Charlie, intent on turning her into a vampire he comes to her aid. The group had intended to take her and then blackmail her research scientist sister to work on their cause. Ethan’s plan is to keep Charlie safe but he finds her too distracting and hence he keeps her at a distance. He knows that he cannot afford any distraction as this could result in either Charlie or him losing their lives. But when the villains become bolder in their attempts and he now has to keep Charlie close and he finds himself enjoying it. Charlie sees Ethan as her hero though he does not see herself as the white knight type. While he is a Guardian, he is anything but an angel as he was an outlaw that was killed in the Wild West before becoming a Guardian. But he is so gorgeous and solid that Charlie cannot help but be strongly attracted to him. But he will not let her be dependent and needy as that would just complicate things further. He can give her everything except for one thing she dare not ask for.
