Most of the novels written by her feature the subject matter of domestic abuse, alcoholism and death. Mary has also published a few other fantasy, romance and adult fiction novels under the pen name M.J. Putney. Mary was born and brought up in New York and had an addiction reading books since her childhood. She attended the Syracuse University and earned her degrees in Industrial Design and English Literature. After that, Mary began working on a number of design projects in England and California. After working as a designer for a short period, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland and has been living there comfortably since then and working as a renowned novelist, writing novels for most of the time.
Although she had the dream of becoming a writer, she did not feel that it was an achievable goal in the beginning. However, she began to explore her writing skills after purchasing a computer, knowing that it can be used as an effective tool for writing. As soon as she owned a computer, she began working merrily on her first novel, with a sense of rush in getting her first book published soon. Fortune favored her attempts and her life changed completely with the success of her first book, which sold too quickly after its publication. Later, she gave up her job as a freelance graphic designer to become a full time writer. Since the start of Mary’s career as an author in the year 1987, she has published around thirty books and is still contributing to her writings. The novels written by Mary generally feature a psychological depth in terms of social issues like domestic abuse and alcoholism. Her novels have made it to the bestseller lists of almost all journals like the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Publishers Weekly and USA Today.
The Library Journal has named five books written by Mary among the top 5 romances of the year. A couple of other novels of hers were also rated among the top 10 romances by the Booklist, which is published by the American Library Association. The success of her novels has allowed her to become the finalist of the RITA Award for nine times in her career. Mary also won the RITA Award for a couple of her books. Her stint at being the bestselling author for a number of times has made her feature on the RWA Honor Roll. Mary has won the career achievement award for two times. Apart from these, she has won the NJRW Golden Leaf award for four times in the romance novel category and one more time as a career achievement in the historical romance category. Along with the historical romances, Mary has also published a few contemporary romances as well. Recently, Mary has also started writing fantasy romance novels as well. Mary Jo Putney never got married and lives happily along with her cats in her home in Baltimore.
One of the initial novel series written by Mary is the Fallen Angels series, which consists of 7 different novels published from 1993 to 1997. The first novel of the series was titled ‘Thunder & Roses’. It was published in the year 1993 by the Topaz publishing house. The novel depicts the life of the main characters, Clare Morgan and Nicholas Davies. The opening sequence of the novel shows Nicholas Davies as a notorious rake. He is the son of a gypsy and a rogue, who likes to be notorious and enjoy his life without any tension. However, he experiences a shattering betrayal that leaves him alone.
Nicholas begins to feel lonely and keeps roaming in and around Welsh countryside, deeply heartbroken. On the other hand, Clare Morgan is described as a quiet school teacher who tries desperately to save her village. She requests the Demon Earl to help her in the task of saving her village. Usually, Nicholas does not like to involve himself in the problems of others. But, after learning about the desperate attempts of Clare Morgan, he agrees to help her, but on the condition that Clare has to live with him for a period of three months.
The second novel of the series was published in the year 2006 by the Signet publishing house. It was titled ‘Petals in the Storm’. The novel depicts the life of the central characters, Margot Ashton and Rafe Whitbourne. Because of having similar characters and plot, the novel also forms the second installment of the Regency series of novels written by Mary Jo Putney. The novel was originally titled The Controversial Countess, which was changed at the time of publishing. The opening sequence of the novels depicts Rafe Whitbourne as a cool and sensual Duke of Candover. He has earned his reputation of being a rake in the silken boudoirs of aristocracy of England and has learnt not to give away his hand or heart. He meets the most beautiful spy in the whole of Europe while on a vital mission for one of his friends in Paris.
The spy named Countess Magda Janos is described as a smoky-eyed temptress. Rafe comes to know about her true identity of not being an actual countess. He learns that she was a deceitful tart who had betrayed him around 12 years ago. At that time, she was the only woman Rafe had loved deeply and also the only one whom he had despised ever. But she had left him heartbroken for reasons best known to her. Margot Ashton is introduced in the plot of the novel as a lady who desperately wants to forget her terrible past and also the man responsible for doing wrong with her.
Margot and Rafe come together with the patriotic feeling towards their homeland and bind together to overcome the intrigue of the shadow land. In their attempt to save their homeland, Rafe and Margot enter into the dangerous plot which may turn into a deadly war. They also get bound by the feeling of love and passion for each other. The novel became successful among the readers just like the first novel and author Mary was praised for her efforts and exceptional writing. The characters seemed real and strong. She got a lot of motivation from the overwhelming response of the readers and the critics. This allowed her to write a number of other successful novels as well.
