About Cherie Dimaline
Coming from Canada, the highly regarded author of Young Adult fiction Cherie Dimaline is a world renowned novelist of compelling and intriguing stories. Knowing exactly how to craft a finely tuned narrative, she really sets herself apart from other authors currently working within her field. Winning numerous awards for her work, she is a writer quite unlike any other, producing stories that really resonate with her readership. This is clearly evident in the fact that she’s attracted an audience from around the world, with more and discovering her work every day.

The characters she crafts really do ring true, speaking in a personal, almost intimate way, setting her apart from other writers in her field. Leaping off the page, they lend themselves to the narrative, giving them a very real and tangible quality, and one that’s easy to relate to. Knowing and understanding her audience, Dimaline writes with a high level of confidence, something which she’s developed for a long time now. The stories themselves are also intriguing, as they keep the reader constantly hooked, not just feeling for the protagonist, but constantly turning the page to see what’s coming next.

There’s a lyrical quality to her work that allows her words to flow across the page, really grabbing the audience and pulling them in. Taking fantastical elements and putting them into her work, she combines a number of different genres in order to say exactly what it is that she wants to say. From themes of global warming, to growing up, she deals with a whole range of different subjects with a great deal of tact and heart. This has allowed her to become the writer that she currently is today, with a lot more to come into the foreseeable future.

Early and Personal Life:
Born in the 2nd of July in 1975, Cherie Dimaline grew up in the Georgian Bay of Canada and Métis Nation, with the Métis being her heritage. This would come to inform a lot of her career and output, as it would inspire much of her writing, as she’d continue to develop as an author, moving to Ontario, and Toronto. Spending many of her childhood summers learning about her own roots, she’d return to the Métis Nation, immersing herself heavily in the stories and folklore of her culture.

Growing up she’d also help her father, a magician, working as his assistant, before going on to undertake a variety of different jobs, from museum to curator, to investment manager, along with women’s resource center director. She has worked on various other projects as well, including different community based operations, working in numerous different capacities. Still writing to this day, she’s also working on adapting her work for television, with ‘The Marrow Thieves’ being transferred to the screen.

Writing Career:
Bringing out her first full title in 2010, Dimaline would make her debut with the novel ‘Seven Gifts for Cedar’. Winning plenty of awards for her work, she is not without acclaim either, having received the Fiction Book of the Year, gaining it from the Anskohk Aboriginal Literature Festival, amongst many other awards. She’s also provided numerous different contributions to various different publications, along with contributing to the writing community at large. A writer in residence for the Toronto Public Library, she continues to write, with a lot more planned on the horizon.

The Girl Who Grew a Galaxy
This was initially published on the 6th of June in 2013, and it would come out to much acclaim, showing Dimaline writing her first full novel. Whilst Dimaline had written a shorter fiction collection before, with ‘Red Rooms’ in 2011, this would be her first complete novel. From this she would be heralded as a writer to watch, with it coming out through the ‘Theytus Books’ publishing imprint.

There’s a lot going on in this novel, with plenty of deeper psychological themes and ideas at play throughout the story. With a strong character at its heart, Rudy Bloom is a well drawn protagonist who feels wholly real and believable, as she carries the narrative. The other characters are also well realized, allowing the story to really breathe, bringing the reader in and saying a lot in the process.

With so much going on in her life, Rudy Bloom has to contend with not only has a miserable job at a museum, but she’s surrounded by an odd galaxy of planets. With her mother eating herself to death, along with a manipulative friend, things are more than difficult for her at the moment. That’s when she discovers an astronomer in a strange attic, and they’re offering her path out of her current predicament. Will she be able to find a way out of it all? Can she finally find peace and happiness? What will become of the girl who grew a galaxy?

Empire of Wild
Brought out through the ‘Penguin Random House Canada’ publishing house this time round, this would be another stand-alone from Cherie Dimaline. Released on the 17th of September in 2019, it was a fantastical Young Adult novel, with a take on the classic fairy tale geared for a more mature audience. Taking the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ into a whole new age, it’s an inspired story with a lot to offer the reader.

Many of the passages here are so haunting, leaving such a strong imprint, that it’s not a story that’s quickly forgotten. Featuring some elements of fantasy too, it’s an interesting take on the fairy tale formula, making a powerful impression on the the reader. There are constant surprises on every page, with it being a true masterclass in storytelling, as it brings its vivid world powerfully to life.

Searching for her husband for well over a year, Joan has a broken heart, as she looks for Victor far and wide across the land. Waking up hungover in the car-park of a Walmart, she catches the end of a service at the revival tent of popular preacher Eugene Wolff, which is where she sees Victor. He insists he isn’t Victor though, but the Reverend Wolff, and he’s bringing Jesus to the local Métis people, and it’s up to her find out what he’s really up to. Can she find the truth behind his actions? How will her new friends, Ajean euchre player, and Zeus, her twelve year old nephew, help her? What will become of them in the empire of wild?
