James Earl Carter Jr. otherwise known as Jimmy Carter was the 39th president of the United States between 1977 and 1981. He was born in the small town of Plains, Georgia in 1924 though he spent much of his childhood in the nearby small village of Archery. Jimmy was born to James Earl Carter Sr., a businessman, and farmer and registered nurse, Lillian Gordy Carter. He went to a public high school in Plains before going to Georgia Institute of Technology and Southwestern College in Georgia. In 1946, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy. He was a submariner in the Navy working in the Pacific and Atlantic fleets where he rose to the rank of lieutenant. He was good at his job and caught the eye of Admiral Hyman Rickover who designated him for the nuclear submarine program. He was then sent to New York under Schenectady where he went on to study nuclear physics and reactor technology at Union College. During this time he was also a senior officer for the second nuclear submarine Seawolf and was in charge of pre-commissioning the crew.

In 1946, Jimmy Carter got married to Rosalyn Smith who just like him came from the small town of Plains, Georgia, The next eight years of the married couple’s lives were typical for a post-war family. Within a year they had their first child and eventually a daughter and two more sons. As an officer, Carter worked long hours while Rosalyn was a stay at home mother that kept the family home and raised the children. In 1953 his father died of cancer leaving behind a farming business without anyone to take care of it. Carter resigned his commission in the navy and went back home to Georgia to take over the family business. He took over the farms while his wife ran the general-purpose farm supply and seed company named Carter’s Warehouse. It was not long before he was elected to a variety of leadership positions in his community. He served in the county board for the library, the hospital authority, and the supervisory board for education for several years. In 1962, he decided to run for the Senate and won the election on the first try. In 1966 he set his eyes higher vying for the governorship of Georgia which he lost. He tried again in 1971 and this time won. Carter was then elected campaign chairman of the 1974 gubernatorial and congressional elections and executed his duties with distinction.

In December of 1974, he announced that he would be running for the American presidency. While he did not have much of a national network, he managed to win the Democratic Party’s nomination at the National Convention. He would later beat Gerald Ford in 1976 and would serve as president for four years between 1977 and 1981. He had several foreign policy accomplishments during his time in office that included establishing diplomatic relations with China, the Panama Canal treaties, the SALT II treaty with the then Soviet Union, the Camp David Accords, and the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. Carter also championed human rights across the globe while also working to improve things on the domestic front. Some of his achievements include major legislation protecting the environment such as the Alaska National Interest Lands, the implementation of a comprehensive energy program, major educational programs, deregulation of finance, energy, communications, and transport.Nonetheless, Jimmy Carter’s presidency has also been dogged by allegations of being bland and ineffective. Perhaps this is the reason that he became a one time president. He was voted out in 1981 when he was beaten by Ronald Reagan.

After Jimmy Carter left office in 1981 he founded the Carter Center with his wife Rosalyn. The center is a nonprofit nongovernmental organization that promotes human rights across the world. Under the organization, Carter had traveled extensively across the world observing elections, conducting peace negotiations, and eradicating and advancing disease prevention in developing nations. He has also worked with the Habitat for Humanity project an organization that helps low income across the world people build their communities and homes. Jimmy is still very vocal about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and has written books and articles about it. As of 2020, Jimmy Carter is the oldest living president having celebrated his 96th birthday though he says he still has a passion for building homes. Mr. Carter wrote his debut work “Why Not the Best?” in 1975. He currently has more than 32 nonfiction works in the spiritual, historical, inspirational, and historical fiction genres.

Jimmy has a commitment to historical accuracy which he combines with a discerning eye to provide one of the most unique perspectives of the American Revolutionary war. He presents some of the least known facets of the war including how the Indian tribes were controlled and shamefully manipulated by their white neighbors. Carter writes a complex and detailed narrative with a huge cast of characters but still manages to tells of the extraordinary difficulties but still shows the different personalities of the common folk that lived through the war.
