The Companion
The Companion is a fantasy series by Tanya Bird. This series introduces a young prince, Tyron, and Aldara, the woman he is hopelessly in love with. The series also introduces the inhabitants of the Archdale Castle, their unique customs, and the happenings in the kingdom. As the love story of this unlikely duo unfolds, many wrangles, warfare, and changes are happening in the kingdom and beyond. It is amazing how the author expertly weaves these storylines together without taking the focus off Tyron and Aldara.

The Royal Companion
The Royal Companion comes first in The Companion series. Aldara is only sixteen when her mother sells her to the obnoxious Prince Pandarus. The young woman is forced to leave her life and head to Archdale Castle for her training. Inside the castle, Aldara will be mentored to become Prince Tyron’s Companion. Companions are beautiful women, adept to conversation, that work as royal bed warmers. Even though Aldara doesn’t like her new role, there is very little she can do to change the situation. Also, no matter the training, it is hard for her to hide her tomboy nature. Will this work to her disadvantage when it’s finally time to meet Prince Tyron?

Prince Tyron is not an easy man to love. He has just come home from the war, and all he wants is to be left alone. The prince is not happy to discover that his brother arranged for a companion for him, so he spends some time ignoring Aldara. However, it doesn’t take him long to figure out that Aldara is not like other girls. Despite her polished exterior, there is a fire inside her that makes her unique. Aldara walks with her face held up high, and her laughter lightens Aldara’s dark days. As the relationship between Aldara and her prince develops, Tyron’s heart starts to soften. However, there are rules to follow where their relationship is concerned, and they know that breaking them would come with dire consequences.

If you enjoy medieval romance stories, you will love this book. Despite all the odds against them, Aldara and Prince Tyron will still find a way to love each other. The worldbuilding is simple, and the storyline has all the right ingredients for a good fantasy story. It is fun reading about the king, princes, fights, and alliances with neighboring countries. However, the main focus is on Aldara and Tyron’s romance. The ending will leave you with more than enough questions, so you would rather get the second in the series before getting there. Despite the darkness in certain parts of the story, this is one fascinating read that will keep you intrigued to the end.

The Royal Companion is an intriguing fantasy story of love, heartache, and everything in between. You will enjoy following Aldara through her evolution from an independent-minded farm girl to a difficult courtesan. Tyron is a tortured soul, and it is said that he took his frustrations out on Aldara. This young prince also goes through a transformation of his own when he starts falling in love with Aldara. There are also other characters that you will love, and hope to see more of them in subsequent books. In case you are looking for an exciting and out of the ordinary story, this book is perfect.

The Common Girl
The Common Girl comes second in The Companion series. This book starts where the last installment ended, and Tryon is still going through PTSD. His feelings for Aldara continue to deepen, yet he cannot love her openly. Since he is a prince and she is just his concubine, these two are forbidden from building a serious relationship. When a rebellious act comes with brutal consequences, the prince knows he has to do something to protect Aldara. Her future in the castle seems uncertain, but Tyron is determined to ensure that she is well protected. Can Tyron change the longstanding tradition that prohibited him from actively dating his concubine? What happens if the rest of the royal family doesn’t agree with him?

Prince Tyron did not want a Companion in the first place. However, after meeting Aldara and getting to know her, he cannot imagine a life without her. Aldara did not want to be a Companion either. This is a choice that was made on her behalf, and she never imagined that she would fall in love with the prince. For a girl who enjoyed her freedom, choosing to get entangled with the prince seems like a huge sacrifice. However, their relationship is falling apart thanks to traditions that are beyond their control. Tyron is willing to go to the extremes to keep her safe, even if it means that he will not be able to see the woman he loves for a while.

This is yet another tender and heart-stopping read. After the circumstances in the first book, Aldara is no longer safe, and the prince arranges for a haven for her. However, when Zoelin attacks Syrasan, the duo discovers that even that haven is no longer safe. Sadly, Tyron and Aldara are forced to make such tough choices for being in love. These two deserve each other, and you cannot help but hope that things will get easier for them. There will be many heartbreaking events in this story, yet the story is so well written that you will not want to stop once you start reading.

The Common Girl is a perfect addition to this series. Once again, we join Aldara and prince Tyron as they fight for the love they share. Aldara remains a lovable character, and her wisdom is evident throughout the pages. For an eighteen-year-old, she knows too much for her age. Tyron is still the brooding male he was in the first installment, but now that his feelings for Aldara have deepened, he is more proactive where her protection is concerned. There is also some political intrigue and a cliffhanger that will send you searching for the next book in the series.
