Bette Midler
Bette Midler was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on December 1, 1945 where her family was one of the very few Jewish families in a primarily Asian neighborhood. Her mom, Ruth, was a housewife and a seamstress, while her dad, Fred Midler, worked as a painter at a Navy base in Hawaii and he was also a house painter. She is the third of four kids.

She started singing as a kid, and her mom encouraged an interest in theater. By the time she had graduated from high school, Midler had performed in many amateur shows.

She was named for Bette Davis, however Davis pronounced her name as two syllables, while Midler just uses one.

Bette grew up in Aiea and went to Radford High School in Honolulu. She was voted the “Most Talkative” in the 1961 school Hoss Election, and in 1963 was voted “Most Dramatic” in her senior year. She majored in drama at the University of Hawaii at Manoa however ended up leaving after just three semesters. She earned money by appearing as an extra in the film Hawaii, playing an uncredited seasick passenger named Miss David Buff.

Bette moved to New York City during the summer of 1965, and used the money from her work on Hawaii. She studied theater under Uta Hagen at HB Studio. She landed her very first professional onstage role in Miss Nefertiti Regrets and Cinderella Revisited, both of which were Tom Eyen’s Off-Off-Broadway plays.

She started singing in the Continental Baths, which is a gay bathhouse in the Ansonia Hotel, during the summer of 1970. At this same time, she became close to her piano accompanist, Barry Manilow, who later produced The Divine Miss M, her first album in 1972. It was also during her time at the Continental Baths that she was able to build up a core following.

During the release of “Bathhouse Betty” in the late nineties, she commented on her time performing there, saying that she is still proud of those days, despite the way things turned out. And she feels like she was at the forefront of the gay liberation movement, and she hopes she did her part to help move it forward. So she wears the label of “Bathhouse Betty” with pride.

Bette starred in the very first professional production of “Tommy”, The Who’s rock opera in the year 1971, with the Seattle Opera and director Richard Pearlman. It was during this run that she first appeared on The Tonight Show.

She has won a Golden Globe, four Grammys, an Emmy, and a Tony. Bette has also been nominated twice for Academy Awards and once for a British Academy Film Award. In 2012, she received a lifetime achievement award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Along with her career as a performer, she was active in various different social causes, working as a spokesperson for AIDS awareness and founded the New York Restoration Project to restore New York community gardens and parks.

Bette married an artist named Martin von Hasselberg on December 16, 1984, and their daughter, named Sophie von Hasselberg, was born November 14, 1986.
