Hank Phillippi Ryan is the bestselling writer of seven award winning novels. Ryan was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended school at the Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio and studied abroad at the International School in Hamburg, Germany. Before she ventured into writing, her first job was broadcasting as a reporter for WIBC radio in 1971. She then became a legislative assistant in Washington DC for the Administrative Practice and Procedure Subcommittee within the Senate Judiciary Committee. Her writing career kicked off when she became an editorial assistant at the Rolling Stone Magazine.

In 1975, she joined the WTHR-TV in Indianapolis where she worked as a political reporter, she moved to WSB-TV in 1976 and as a political reporter and a weekend anchor. Ryan later joined WHDH-TV in 1983 as a general assignment reporter. She was later named as the principal reporter for station’s investigative unit. Ryan has had a solid experience in investigative reporting, through this she has been able to win 28 Emmy Awards and 12 Edward Murrow Awards for her consumer and investigative reporting.

Hank Phillippi Ryan has been able to writer seven award winning novels. The novels feature a high degree of suspense, National reviews have had her labelled as the master of crafting suspenseful mysteries. Her first published novel was Prime Time, it won the Agatha Award as the best first novel in 2007. Her follow-up novel Face Time released in October 2007 was also a notable book.

Prime Time

Prime Time is the debut of the Charlotte McNally mysteries. It is a good read and a fast-paced novel which you will really enjoy. It offers a suspenseful thriller, the journalism world is made so real since the author, Ryan is an investigative reporter herself. What you will really like about this book is the main character Charlie, a forty six year old woman trying to survive in a world where how old you are and how you look mean a lot.

In the dangerous world of investigative journalism, Charlie knows that she wants to better put out all the stops and kiss her job goodbye. She is scrambling for a big story for the November sweeps and has not yet come up with anything. She is terrified that she’s on her way out and would probably be replaced by someone younger and prettier. She finally gets her story, it turns out that her life is on the line when she learns that an email looking innocent resulted in murder and fraud rings. She begins her investigation, and all too soon is led to the world of Josh Gelston who is a little too handsome.

Ryan manages to pull off a great character anyone can easily relate to. Charlie is a funny, intelligent and sassy character with a nose for getting the best stories, she further has awards to prove it. She is not afraid for whatever she has to do in order to get her story, even if it means putting her life on the line.

The Wrong Girl novel

The Wrong Girl is a second installment of the Jane Ryland series. The novel had the extraordinary honor of winning the Agatha Award and Daphne Award. It is a Boston Globe bestseller and also an Anthony Award Nominee. It offers a spine-chilling and heart-wrenching suspense that explores a terrifying scenarios present at the heart of every family.

Truth be told novel

It is impossible to finish reviewing Ryan’s books without reviewing the Truth Be Told novel, the latest novel by Ryan. The novel is a continuation of the Jake Brogan and Jane Ryland series. The series starts off with the tragedy of a middle class family being removed from the home. Ryland has to dig up the facts and unfold the story. After venturing a little into the heartbreaking story and several foreclosures, she soon finds out the whole truth behind the big-bucks scheme. The whole scheme is made of dangerous players that will do everything, including murder to make their goal a secret.

Awards

Hank Phillipi Ryan has garnered several awards both from her books and her reporting career. In her first four mysteries, Prime Time won the Agatha Award. Face Time won the BookSense Notable Book and the latter two, Air Time and drive time were both Agatha and Anthony award nominees for the best novels of 2009 and 2010.

Hank is an award winning investigative reporter at Bostons’ NBC. Her work has resulted in changes in the laws, homes removed from foreclosure, millions of dollars in refunds and people sent to prison. Hank has further won dozens of reputations for her revolutionary journalism. She has been a radio reporter, a legislative aide in United States Senate. Hank is also at the national board of the American Mystery Writers, she served in 2013 as the president of the National Sisters Crime. Ryan currently lives with her husband in suburban Boston.
