D.D. Black
When D. D. Black is not busy writing, he can be found strolling around the beaches of the Pacific Northwest, throwing a ball for his corgi again and again and again, and cooking dinner for his wife.

“The Bones at Point No Point” is the first novel in the “Thomas Austin” series and was released in 2022. How do you catch a killer that’s already behind bars?

Thomas Austin, once upon a time, was a prominent NYPD detective, known for locking up this psychopathic serial killer dubbed “The Holiday Baby Butcher”. Now retired in a tiny beach town in the Pacific Northwest, and he runs this little cafe, attempting to overcome losing his wife, a DA that was gunned down just a year ago.

However when this mysterious bag of bones shows up on a beach nearby, he’s pulled back into a world that he thought he had left behind. The holiday Baby Butcher has been locked up, so this has to be a copycat. Yet with every new clue, the killer seems to be ever closer to the real thing. And once Austin learns the truth, finally, it is a twist that’s shocking enough to shake him to his core.

“The Shadows of Pike Place” is the second novel in the “Thomas Austin” series and was released in 2022. Sometimes the past is better left buried. The rich matriarch of a rich Seattle family dies under suspicious circumstances, private investigator Thomas Austin is on this case. This time around, the suspect list is quite easy.

Seven people were in the lakefront mansion with the millionaire when she died: a jealous brother-in-law, a beloved chef, a spoiled son, a rebellious grandson, an arrogant memoirist, and a pair of successful daughters. Each of whom had motive. Each had opportunity. Which one’s the killer?

Austin, in order to solve this case, has to look into the past of one of Seattle’s most powerful families. With help from one long lost diary and a fiery reporter, he uncovers this series of dark secrets which betray the criminal underbelly of old money Seattle.

However the closer that Austin gets to the truth, the more dangerous his investigation gets. Sometimes, as you dig into a secret past, the past comes to bury you.

“The Fallen of Foulweather Bluff” is the third novel in the “Thomas Austin” series and was released in 2022. If the marshlands could talk, whose name would they whisper?

On Memorial Day of 1992, three decorated Navy officers vanished in the sleepy beach town of Hansville, Washington. Thirty years later, and their medals were discovered in the marshlands of Foulweather Bluff. So were their bones.

For Thomas Austin, this case hits pretty close to home. He’s the son of a JAG lawyer, and as such, he grew up around the Navy. In order to solve this case, he’ll have to piece together the clues buried in the marshlands, and some of the dark secrets hidden in Navy history.

However once another investigator vanishes, he realizes that this threat might not be in the past. In his most personal and shocking case to date, the darkness comes for Austin in a way that it hasn’t before. And the gut wrenching final revelation leaves him questioning everything that he has ever known, even his own past.

“The Horror at Murden Cove” is the fourth novel in the “Thomas Austin” series and was released in 2023. A blind witness, a triple homicide. What’s the sound of evil?

Late this one night, two young couples walked to this park in an affluent Bainbridge Island neighborhood to celebrate the sale of their tech startup. The very next morning, three mutilated corpses were discovered. Just one witness survived. Blind from birth, so she saw nothing. However she heard it all. This killer took their time, butchering her friends while she listened to every sadistic moment. What she heard left her traumatized, broken, and hardly able to speak.

Thomas Austin is the only person able to get her able to open up. And when she does, the suspect list is shocking: the murders were committed by one of five people, each of whom the witness had been dating.

Austin, who’s stranded on the island after a rare summer storm closes the ferries and bridges, is forced to crack this case before the storm ends and the murderer escapes permanently. However when another massacre happens, which is more gruesome than the first one, he realizes that this killer’s motive is not what he’d imagined originally.

This is a killer more depraved than any other he’s ever seen. This is truly the stuff of nightmares. This one locks the reader on a storm battered island with a murderer whose motive is so deranged, you’ll need to read the book a second time just to believe it.

“The Things She Stole” is the first novel in the “Brandon Penny” series and was released in 2022. Brandon Penny was a criminal prodigy, twenty years prior. But today, he is a brokenhearted film buff working a dead end job. However everything’s about to change. When he was a child, he carefully studied his mom and her crew of thieves. Brandon, gifted from the beginning, was pulling short cons by the age of six, stealing jewelry by eight, and orchestrating heists by the time he was eleven. However this one night a job went bad, a gun went off, and Brandon’s mom vanished.

Brandon was then shuffled from one foster home to another, and he burned with anger. Why did his mother leave him behind? What really happened that night? And why did she never come back? When his mom does finally return to Portland for this major heist, the cops ask Brandon to help them track her down. He does not trust the police, cannot trust his mom, and he’s much too afraid to trust the ex that he still loves. Only one he’s able to count on is that twelve year old criminal genius still living inside of him. One way or another, he will get his answers, however he will have to tear down the life he’s built to do it.
