Elisabetta Dami is an Italian children’s fiction writer, author of the bestselling children’s book Geronimo Stilton. She is the daughter of publisher Piero Dami, who is the founder of Dami Editore in 1972. Elisabetta Dami began working as a proofreader at the family publishing house and started to write her fantastic stories at the age of 19. She found inspiration by helping sick children as a volunteer at a very young age, and this led her into the world of fiction writing. She is also a co-owner of an Italian based publishing company, Edizioni Piemme. She got interested and passionate about the idea of writing fiction for children after she gained experience assisting sick children as a volunteer, and later as a traveler. With her growing experience, Elisabetta Dami began writing adventure stories featuring a mouse, Geronimo Stilton. She began telling adventure stories about Geronimo Stilton, which is her most famous work. She started travelling from the age of 23, and since then her books are greatly inspired by her adventures around the world. Apart from being a wistful fiction writer, Elisabetta Dami loves adventure explorations. Her other books have Thea Stilto, and The Thea Sisters as the main characters. In 1981, she travelled around the world for inspiration to write fiction stories for children. She has travelled many places in the world, some of them being the cold Alaska, Easter Island in Egypt, Zambia to visit Abataka Foundation School. She is a courageous explorer who challenged herself to climb Kilimanjaro, trek in Nepal, and she also ran a 75-mile marathon in the Sahara Desert as well as two New York City marathons. Her enthusiasm in travelling and adventure also led her do parachute jumps. She divides her time between Italy and the town of Sedona, Arizona. Some years ago Elisabetta Dami also earned a pilot’s license. Elisabetta Dami has written over 100 books. She is 57 years old and is still residing in Milan.
In 1999, she began to collaborate with the Edizioni Piemme publishing house of Milan, Italy, which encouraged her to produce a collection of books illustrating about the adventure of Geronimo Stilton, as her stage name. Geronimo Stilton series, written by Italian author Elisabetta Dami features adventurous stories about a mouse who is the editor of The Rodent Gazette, and the books are told in his voice. In 2000, Elisabetta’s first story came out, more than 74 million copies were sold all around the world, and in 40 variant languages. Her books have been translated into English by Scholastic Inc. since February 2004. The Geronimo Stilton series is intended for children, offering plenty of colorful illustrations, maps, and pictures that can help children to actively expand their vocabulary. In this series, the title character, Geronimo, is a conversing mouse who lives in New Mouse City on Mouse Island, in a world that is very similar to ours. As a business mouse, he works as a journalist and is the director for the fictional newspaper The Rodent’s Gazette, the most important paper on Mouse Island. In his publishing house, many mice were together successfully because their nature was extremely cooperative and friendly. The books are written as though they are autobiographical adventure stories, set in Italy. Geronimo Stilton has a younger sister named Thea Stilton, a cousin named Trap Stilton, and a little nephew, Benjamin Stilton. Geronimo’s personality is introverted and shy, but he enjoys his far-away adventure trips with Thea, Trap, Benjamin, and sometimes his Aunt Sweetfur; the tales of his adventures are perfectly illustrated in his books. The character of Geronimo Stilton is inspired by Elisabetta Dami as she too is an extremely reserved yet talented person, even a little bit introverted. Children loved Mouse Island as they think it’s a special world where anything is possible. They also believed that Geronimo Stilton is alive, and which is why there have been thousands and thousands of letters addressing to the special mouse. Elisabetta Dami answers to them all, effortlessly.
Elisabetta Dami believes the reason behind Geronimo Stilton’s success in fiction is that it conveys positive and heart-warming feelings, respect for nature and the world, honest, sincerity, and especially cooperation. Elisabetta Dami has never uncovered to her admirers that she is the author of the Geronimo Stilton series. She decides to keep her name hidden out of respect for her admirers’ love for her series. All around the world, there are also shows about the Geronimo Stilton series and his wonderful world. There also exists an animated musical about Geronimo named “Geronimo Stilton”. Geronimo Stilton even has his own webpage with games and videos, as well as places to draw and write. Geronimo Stilton has been awarded with numerous prizes, amongst the most prestigious is the Anderson Prize in 2001, the Grand Prize of the License Global at Bologna Book Fair in 2008. These series have also won the 2002 eBook Award for world’s best ratings’ electronic book.
“Mouse Hunter House”, the featured book under the Geronimo Stilton series, is about the difficulties that Geronimo had to face to help support his newspaper, The Rodent’s Gazette. His grandfather announced that Geronimo had to sell his comfy home to support his newspaper, which is why Geronimo set out on a wild, desperate house hunt, all over New Mouse City to find a new home in time of need.
“Lost Treasure of the Emerald Eye”, is another book featured under the Geronimo Stilton series, which is about the quintessential Monday morning struggles that Geronimo had to face while working at a publishing house in New Mouse City. The rhythm of the story begins with how late Geronimo had gotten to reach his office where his colleagues are diligently waiting for his arrival. Geronimo expresses how unfortunate his Monday was for him, but he’s determined still.
Elisabetta Dami’s second most famous book series are The Thea Stilton book series, with The Thea Sisters as the main characters, a spinoff of the Geronimo Stilton series. There are over 20 books published under this series. The main characters of The Thea Stilton book series are Colette, Violet, Nicky, Paulina, and Pamela. They may have different personalities, but they make an unbreakable team. With all her achievements, writing has comfortably become what defines Elisabetta Dami.
