Early and Personal Life
Owl Goingback was born James Russell Heidbrink on May 1, 1959, in St. Louis, Missouri. At age ten, he took his stepfather’s surname, Heidbrink, after being adopted. In 2000, he legally changed his name to Owl Goingback, embracing the identity he’s now known by.
Growing up in the rural Midwest, he developed an early love for storytelling. His mother, Quiet Starr, and his upbringing shaped his creative perspective. After leaving high school early, he joined the U.S. Air Force, later furthering his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
In 1978, he married Nancy Santos Bello, and together they raised two sons, Jason and Michael. His life experiences, from military service to family, have influenced his writing in subtle but meaningful ways. These personal roots, combined with his dedication to craft, have made him the respected author he is today.
Writing Career
Owl Goingback has built a notable career as a horror novelist, often weaving Native American themes into his chilling tales. His debut novel, Crota (1996), set the tone for his signature blend of supernatural terror and cultural depth. Over the years, he has expanded his bibliography with works like Darker Than Night (1999) and Coyote Rage (2019), showcasing his ability to craft gripping, original horror.
In addition to novels, Goingback released Tribal Screams (2018), a collection of short stories that further explore his distinctive style. His other works, such as Breed (2002) and Evil Whispers (2001), also captivated readers with their suspenseful storytelling.
With more projects on the horizon, his writing career remains as dynamic as ever.
Crota
Owl Goingback’s horror novel Crota was published on April 17, 1996, by Berkley. The book is a standalone mystery thriller with supernatural elements. It marked Goingback’s debut as a novelist and helped establish his reputation in the horror genre.
A team of hunters tracks a deadly creature known as Crota, feared in local Missouri Native American legends. The beast leaves mutilated corpses in its wake while growing stronger. Its path leads back to an underground maze hiding something terrifying. The hunters must stop it before the horror escalates further.
Readers praise Crota for its intense creature horror and Native American folklore twist. The fast-paced hunt and eerie underground terror deliver satisfying chills. A strong debut showcasing Goingback’s talent.
Evil Whispers
Owl Goingback’s horror novel Evil Whispers was published on May 1, 2001, by Signet. The book is a supernatural thriller featuring the author’s signature blend of horror and suspense. This marked another successful entry in Goingback’s growing catalog of chilling, folklore-infused horror fiction.
Robert and Janet Patterson take their daughter Krissy to a remote Florida town for a peaceful vacation. The isolated location seems ideal at first, but they ignore disturbing local legends about the area. They also dismiss Krissy’s frightened claims about eerie whispers coming from the surrounding woods. When their daughter mysteriously vanishes, the terrified parents realize too late that something sinister is hunting them.
Many have enjoyed Evil Whispers for its creepy backwoods atmosphere and mounting supernatural dread. Goingback delivers tense family horror with compelling folklore elements. A gripping read for thriller fans.
Coyote Rage
Owl Goingback’s horror-fantasy novel Coyote Rage was published on February 6, 2019, by Independent Legions Publishing. This work continues Goingback’s tradition of blending supernatural horror with cultural mythology. The release added to his acclaimed body of genre fiction featuring Native American themes.
Coyote, the murderous shape-shifter, leaves a bloody trail while hunting human representatives to the Great Council in Galun’lati. His goal is to end mankind’s rule in the New World through systematic slaughter. Raven discovers this sinister plot and risks everything, even physical transformation, to protect targets Luther Watie and Sarah Reynolds. As dark forces gather across two worlds, the balance of power hangs between humanity’s survival and the resurgence of primal, fanged rulers.
