Deep Cuts is a 2024 novel from Holly Brickley. It was a national bestseller in addition to being a Today Show Spring Pick. Others have also praised this book, with bestselling author Coco Mellors calling the story as ‘tender as a ballad’ and as ‘pleasurable as a pop song’.
Cameron Crowe also praised the novel, saying that the book will live alongside all of ‘the unforgettable music that Holly writes about so beautifully’. If you have been looking for something new to enjoy, check out this debut from a fresh voice in fiction and see what you think!
The song whispered to Percy one day in her living room that life can be so big. On a Friday night in Berkeley at a campus bar in the fall of 2000, Percy Marks cannot stop herself from pontificating about music once more.
Hall and Oates happens to be on the jukebox. Percy doesn’t have any particular talent for music, she just has lots of opinions about it. But in the process she cannot stop herself from over-analyzing the song, giving in to what she is aware is most likely her most irritating habit.
Something appears to be different tonight, however. There’s a guy beside her at the bar, a songwriter named Joe Morrow and also a student. He’s not irritated at all by Percy’s musings. It’s quite the opposite, and as Joe opens his ears to her, he’s finding that he could listen to this girl talk all night.
Joe decides to ask Percy to listen to one of his songs and give him some feedback. The results end up sparking a partnership between the two of them that will cross over the years. It will end up sparking new passions in both of them and end up crushing their egos continually.
What’s left to figure out is if their collaborating is worth the cost of it, or if it is ultimately keeping Percy back from finding her own voice. Bouncing from the dance floors of San Francisco to the bars of Brooklyn, Deep Cuts takes a look at the nature of everything from belonging to talent to obsession and our collective need to be heard. Check out Deep Cuts to go along on the adventure yourself!
