Michael McDowell was a successful American published author. He is known for being a prolific horror writer.
He was born in Enterprise, Alabama on June 1, 1950. He attended public schools in southern Alabama up until 1968. He then attended Harvard, graduating with his bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in English. In 1978, he earned a Ph.D. in English and American literature from Brandeis.
His first book to be sold and his seventh novel to be written in The Amulet. It was released in 1979 and would be followed by many other works of fiction that were written either using his own name or pen names such as Axel Young, Nathan Aldyne, Mike McCray, and Preston Macadam.
Notable books that he has written include The Elementals, a southern Gothic horror novel, as well as the Blackwater series and the Jack and Susan trilogy of books. By the time 1985 rolled around, Michael was plenty busy writing screenplays for television, which extended to writing episodes for a variety of anthology series like Amazing Stories, Tales from the Darkside, Tales from the Crypt, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents.
Michael also wrote the screenplay for Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Thinner. He would pass away in Boston, Massachusetts on December 27, 1999 from illness that was related to AIDS. An unfinished novel of his was completed by Tabitha King. Candles Burning was released in 2006.
Stephen King has praised McDowell as one of the ‘finest writers of paperback originals in America today’. About his career, the author always was authentic and true to who he was. In the book Faces of Fear in 1985, he said that he was a commercial writer and was ‘proud of that’. He said straightforward that he was writing things ‘to be put in the bookstore next month’ and thought that it was a ‘mistake to try to write for the ages’.
The Flood is the first book in the Blackwater series by Michael McDowell. When it comes to writing novels, this matriarchal saga with powerful women fighting to gain dominance for generations has been masterfully written by McDowell, creating a portrait that is both realistic with touches of the supernatural with visual writing that will have the reader turning the pages to get to the end and find out what happens!
Stephen King has called with author his friend and his teacher, praising him for being fascinating as well as ‘scary’ and ‘just cool’, referring to him as the ‘best of all of us’. This book has been referred to as a combination of ‘Dumas and Lovecraft’ as well as a cross ‘between Stephen King and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ by Robert Shaplen, who called the work ‘ruthlessly addictive’.
Perdido is a small town located in southern Alabama. It is dealing with being flooded by the cold, dark waters of the Blackwater River. Now the Caskeys are trying to contend with all of the damage that was caused by the floor. The large group of wealthy landowners now have to deal with the natural fallout that came from this event.
The group is led by the matriarch Mary-Love as well as their obedient son Oscar. The Caskeys are working to try and get themselves together as well as making sure that their fortunes are protected. The one thing that they have not counted on is the mysterious appearance of Elinor Dammert into all of their lives.
She’s a gorgeous young woman but does not have a lot to say. She is instead intent on being focused on her goal of getting closer to the Caskeys no matter what it takes. Will she be successful, or is this clan too used to protecting themselves to let an outsider in? Read this book to find out!
The Levee is the second book in the Blackwater series by Michael McDowell. If you liked the first book in this series, then be sure to check out the literary sequel and see what you think.
When Perdido does its best to get over a flood, the damage that the waters have done is still fresh in everyone’s minds and their sight as well. A dam being constructed is proposed with the purposes of keeping yet another catastrophe at bay.
It seems like a good idea and most of the people in the area are behind it. But when the work gets started, there will also appear a strange series of events, from unpredictable currents to disappearances.
At the same time, the Caskey clan is having their own series of differences. Matriarch Mary-Love ends up seeing her interests come together and clash with those of Elinor, her daughter in law. What they don’t yet know is that the tension between the two of them could end up ruining an entire village.
There are big changes that are on their way to Lost, and what no one knows is that the consequences of them will ultimately be devastating. Can the clan and the people that live in the area make it through unscathed, or is there more drama and destruction on the way that they’re not prepared for? Read this book, the second in Michael McDowell’s series, to find out!
