Margery Sharp was born January 24, 1905 in Salisbury in the United Kingdom as Clara Margery Melita Sharp. Part of her childhood was spent in Malta. She passed away on March 14, 1991.
Throughout the course of her career, Sharp was able to pen twenty-six novels, fourteen stories for children, four plays, two mysteries, and a lot of short stories. She is known perhaps best for a series of children’s books that she wrote about Miss Bianca, a little white mouse, and her companion, Bernard.
Many may be familiar with the two Disney movies that were adapted from the stories, which were called The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under. In 1938, she got married to Major Geoffrey Castle, an aeronautical engineer.
The Eye of Love is the first book in the Martha series by Margery Sharp. If you have been searching for a classic mystery to enjoy but don’t know where to start, be sure to check out this book, first released in 1957.
Harry Gibson and Miss Diver first met at the Chelsea Arts Ball. He was going as a paper parcel, and she was attending as a Spanish dancer. The two of them proved that love at first sight is real as they fell deeply in love.
Then Harry Gibson decides that it is in his best interest to marry the unprepossessing daughter of his colleague so that his ailing business can be saved. As a result, Miss Diver is suddenly cut off and doesn’t get a penny.
She must take in a lodger to help make ends meet, which ends up being a fellow named Mr. Philips. He ends up taking her to be a much more wealthy woman than she actually is, which is sure to lead to nothing but trouble. Seeing over them all at this point is Martha, Miss Diver’s niece who is relatively unappealing but also appears to possess some type of artistic genius.
Can Harry Gibson and Miss Diver get together once more, or has the unfortunate decision that he has made cut off all hope of getting together? Will they both be able to survive the consequences of these decisions? Read this book to find out!
Martha In Paris is the second book in the Martha series by Margery Sharp. If you read the first book in the series and enjoyed it, be sure to keep the adventure going in this sparkling and engaging novel!
A young woman is sent to Paris so that she can study painting. Instead she ends up learning lessons all about love and life in this story that focuses on the artistic little girl who is now grown up and first was featured in The Eye of Love.
Martha is 18 years old and she has been given the gift of having the chance to go on an all expenses paid trip to Paris to study in the same place where some of the most famous and impressive painters in the world have also worked and lived.
Even though she is single minded in her pursuit of creativity, it isn’t too long before Martha gets a new admirer in the City of Light. Ironically it is not a handsome and sleek Frenchman who ends up seducing her but a British bank clerk who is sick for home but ends up giving her all of the creature comforts that she is used to at home.
When a complication comes up, Martha ends up dealing with all of the consequences in her usual independent way. Will she find love here or will she merely experience a passing fling in one of the most romantic places in the world?
Clever, sweet, and evoking a Paris in the late 1940s, Martha In Paris is a wonderful picture of the artist as a young woman as she is growing up, having new experiences, and learning more about life. Follow along by getting a copy of this book and going on an international adventure along with this likable and fun protagonist!
