In the cold north of a world is Villiren, a city that has been overrun by violent gangs as well as huge human and animal hybrids. It’s also being stalked by what appears to be a serial killer and is also being targeted by an otherworldly army.
Brynd Lathraea has made an effort to bring his elite Night Guard to assist the city in building up a force that will be strong enough to fight against the invaders. But if they want to be successful, it may very well mean contending with the half-vampire leader of the Bloods gang, which is known for its savage ways.
At the same time, reptilian rumel investigator Rumex Jeryd has arrived looking for refuge from the vindictive emperor of Villjamur and is hoping to find some reprieve. But instead, he discovers that he has instead stepped into a city that is full of intolerance between the species, as well as a large feeling of indifference to the reign of terror being conducted by a murderer, as well as the powerful influence that the local criminals have.
As the enemy gets ready to strike, the defenders of Villiren start to turn on each other. Now there are three refugees that are approaching the city– Jamur Rika, an empress, her sister Eir, and Randur Estevu, a scholar.
Along with the trio, each of them is carrying with them a last hope for survival. But will a shocking revelation end up changing everything for good or is it too late for anything to be done? Read this book to find out!
