The Off-Islander is the first book in the Andy Roark Mystery series by Peter Colt. This is a gritty series that is set on the coast of New England. In this series, a Vietnam veteran who was born in Boston and a private investigator gets hired to try and find a father who has gone missing, but in the end may end up finding a lot more than he originally bargained for.
The city is Boston, and the year is 1982. Andy Roark is a private investigator who has done his best for the past decade to try and find out what his place is in the world once more. When it came to being in Vietnam, he found that there was order and even purpose. Everything that happened, no matter how innocent or brutal, happened for a reason.
At home, after brief stints in college as well as with the police force, Roark has decided that it is time to settle down for an easy routine that is more than steady of divorce as well as insurance fraud cases. Roark’s friend from childhood Danny Sullivan was able to pull himself out of the blue collar Southie to rise through the ranks to become a lawyer who is both powerful and respected.
Now he wants Roark to assist one of his clients with a request that is somewhat sensitive in nature. Deborah Swift is the wealthy wife of a husband who is aspiring to be a California politician. She’s trying to trace her father, who walked out on her mother and herself a long time ago and was last glimpsed on Cape Cod. Different investigators have tackled this and came up with nothing, but in the end, the local connections that Roark has might end up giving him an edge that he did not have otherwise.
This case will end up taking him to the island of Nantucket. It’s a place that is completely calm in its off season, and filled with beautiful charm. But even here, with its appealing streets of cobblestone and its beautiful beaches, the private investigator’s senses let him know that there is danger here, lurking just beneath the surface.
It’s clear that when it comes to things here, not all is as it appears. The largest case in the course of Roark’s career may end up having a profound impact on him as it steals away the small amount of peace of mind that he has left to him. Can he find the strength to make it through it all? Read this mystery novel to find out!
Back Bay Blues is the second book in the Andy Roark Mystery series by Peter Colt. Vietnam veteran turned private investigator in Boston Andy Roark is back for yet another installment, taking on everything from corruption to greed and theft.
The city is Boston, and the year is 1985. Andy Roark went to Vietnam, where he saw death and destruction beyond what he could handle. For all of the soldiers who were lucky enough to make it back alive, there were other casualties from this war too.
These included the loss of trust, tenderness, and connection. Feeling unsettled and adrift, Andy has made a friendship with Nguyen, who owns a Vietnamese restaurant. While taking sips of beer and trading off memories after the restaurant closes, Andy starts to learn about the great lengths that his friend took in order to flee Saigon not long after it fell.
It turns out that the latest case that Andy has received also has ties to Vietnam. His new client is a young Vietnamese woman who is equal parts enigmatic and beautiful. She hires him in order to look into the murder of her uncle. Andy ends up finding out that there is a connection to a group of refugees who are determined to try and throw over the communist government.
The group is led by Colonel Tran, and the committee is taking to local business owners and extorting them so they can raise them. Looking for more answers ends up taking Andy all over the United States, from Boston to D.C. and San Francisco, moving deeper and deeper into a web of betrayal both political and personal the entire time.
Close to the center of this mystery is a connection to the escape that Nguyen took on from Saigon. It may have been decades that have passed, but there are times when the price of freedom ends up putting allies into enemies, transforming loyalties into betrayals and truth to lies. What will happen in the end? Pick up a copy of Back Bay Blues to follow along with yet another exciting adventure with this private investigator to see how this story concludes.
