In the city of Philadelphia during the Jazz Age, a serial killer is on the loose. The year is 1921, and Edie Shippen has come home after recovering from influenza for years in the state of California. When she does so, she is shocked to find out the news that her sweetheart from childhood is engaged. He’s not just engaged to anyone, either– his beloved betrothed is none other than her twin sister.
Edie may not be with him anymore, but she still is heartbroken by the news. She is now adrift and so vows that she is at last going to start living her life again as a woman in the modern world. If anyone gets in her way, that’s just going to be too bad.
The one thing that she did not anticipate was that young women were going to start leaving the city. Well, not leaving exactly. Disappearing. As they all start disappearing, the independence that she has just found starts to feel very dangerous.
Gilbert Lawless came home from the Great War, but even though he was physically back, it was clear to everyone that he had become a shell of who he used to be. He is able to bide his time hiding in the officer of the Coroner of Philadelphia. He just keeps to himself and does his best at that, until a series of corpses enter into the morgue.
Then he finds out that his sister Lizzie has gone missing, and it is the last straw. Gilbert puts his career at risk simply to just ask for help from the person that he knows Lizzie seemed to trust. That would be Edie Shippen, her employer.
Scared that the worst has happened, Edie and Gilbert do all that they can to look for clues. It becomes apparent to them eventually that Lizzie going missing might just have a connection to the deaths that are disrupting the city of Brotherly Love.
There is nothing stopping the killer from striking again. It’s just a matter of time before the killer comes out of the woodwork and claims another victim. Set in the Roaring Twenties, this is a puzzle wrapped up in a mystery that will have readers eagerly turning the pages to get to the end to find out what happens.
