The Forgotten Girl is a 2019 novel by India Hill Brown. When it comes to original stories, this is one that you won’t want to miss.

It’s a cold night in the middle of winter. Iris decides to have a little outdoor fun so she sneaks into a clearing in the woods with Daniel, her best friend. Their intention is to play in the snow that has just freshly fallen.

Once there, Iris makes a little snow angel that is perfect in every way. But once she has made the angel, she finds that there is a crumbling gravestone right beneath her that belongs to a young girl who had the name of Avery Moore while she was alive.

Strange things start happening right off the bat to Iris. She starts having nightmares that are incredibly vivid. She wakes up and finds that her bedroom window has been opened all the way and the snow is coming in. At one point, Iris even thinks that she can see the shadow of a girl that is in the woods, out there lurking. Could it be the spirit of the girl whose name was on that tombstone?

Iris also ends up feeling the abandoned grave pulling her. She isn’t sure if it’s really happening, but it appears that she has this energy that is calling her to come back to the clearing. It doesn’t really make sense but Iris is going through all of this and quickly becomes obsessed with finding out what is really going on.

Daniel and Iris decide that they will research the area more for a school project. While conducting their research, the pair end up finding out that Avery’s grave is part of a forgotten Black cemetery that has been completely neglected. The cemetery actually goes all the way back to a time where in life, white and black people were separated, and that continued to be true in death as this cemetery was exclusively devoted to the eternal resting place of those who were black.

As the two best friends find out more about the past of the town, they become even more determined to restore Avery’s grave. That way, Avery can receive the proper respect that she deserves, and the others who are buried there will also have the appropriate recognition. Perhaps restoring the young girl’s grave will give her a sense of rest and peace and all of the strange things that Iris is experiencing will at last settle down.

What Daniel and Iris end up finding out is that the process is not going to be that easy. Without their knowledge, they have woken up a ghost who is demanding and even jealous. This is a ghost that is not going to be easily satisfied, and she appears not to be swayed by the plans that the pair have to get the cemetery and the souls that reside there their proper recognition.

What the best friends also do not realize is that the ghost may be looking for companionship. It appears that Avery wants a best friend for life, and the spirit does not appear to care what it is going to cost or how it will affect others. Can this little ghost girl be laid to rest and find peace, or is this going to be something that Iris has to deal with for the rest of her life?

When it comes to spooky ghost stories, this one is too compelling to miss! Can Iris and Daniel find a way to let this spirit move on, or are they about to find out that they are in way over their heads? Read The Forgotten Girl to find out!

It’s going to be two weeks there spending time with her brother Owen and their cousins Daisy and Capri, but there are reasons why she’s not looking forward to spending time at the lake house.

They grew up during a time where public pools were segregated, so it’s important to them that everyone knows how– especially since her grandmother’s sister drowned when they were young because she never had the chance to learn how to swim.

Once she is there, Celeste finds that odd things start to occur. Her cousins tell her that she woke them up in the middle of the night, but Celeste doesn’t know what to do about the accusations. She knows that she has been asleep through the night because she was experiencing nightmares where she was drowning, so she couldn’t have been awake to do that, right?

She sees a version of her face, but there’s something different about this version. It seems twisted.
