A Well-Trained Wife: My Escape from Christian Patriarchy is a 2024 memoir by Tia Levings. It was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award in the category of Readers’ Favorite Memoir. What do you do when you realize that maybe no one is coming to save you and you have to save yourself?
Tia was recruited into the fundamentalist Quiverfull movement as a young wife. It was there that she learned that when it comes to being a good Christian, it means that she has to go along with a list of life principles. These were a series of secret and special rules that they had to obey.
By being a submissive and godly wife in the Christian patriarchy, it meant that she must be isolated, follow strict discipline, and attend to an alternative lifestyle that seemed relatively wholesome from the outside. Women were supposed to be quiet and not speak, but to instead serve and function as the keeper of the home.
Tia understood that their lifestyle seemed odd and that the neighbors thought that her family was strange, but she could not risk that their lifestyle would be exposed to anyone outside of the church. Christians were called in scripture to be in the world and not of it, so Tia hid right in front of everyone, enduring years of pain and abuse.
Tia ended up realizing that she was the one who could protect her children from going on to join and become the next generation following in the footsteps. If she didn’t, they might grow up to be part of the next wave of submissive women and patriarchal men.
So Levings started to resist and question the way that they live. However, this put her in more danger as a woman who has opinions in the patriarchy is put more at risk. Soon, Tia contends with the choice of staying and facing the consequences, or leaving along with her children.
This is a unique story that is all about one woman finding the strength within herself to change her circumstances. Told in a beautiful and honest voice, this is a memoir that you will not forget anytime soon as one woman does what she can to rescue herself and her family, while going into the different ways that extreme views can come out in a marriage. Read this book for yourself to follow along with every detail in a clearly recounted story that you won’t want to miss.
I Belong to Me: A Survivor’s Guide to Recovery and Hope After Religious Trauma is another book from Tia Levings. When you try to heal from trauma that was caused by the various aspects of your faith, how do you rebuild your sense of self when religion said that you should not have one?
Tia was indoctrinated from a young age and since early childhood was encouraged to obey, to conform and to want what different people wanted for her. Along the way, Tia found out that if she wanted to be loved and accepted, it meant putting on a performance and becoming someone different from who she really was.
After going through years of abuse while participating in a violent marriage and a religion that was all about control, she eventually got out with her children. She told this story in her book A Well-Trained Wife. Once she had gotten out, she believed that the hard times were behind her. However, she was about to find out that leaving was simply the start.
Tia has the persistent attitude necessary to try and get her life back. So it was that she went on a fifteen year quest to achieve peace in her mind. The result is an actualized, emotionally regulated woman who is self aware and can tell her story without traumatizing herself once more. She is now trying to help others get what is theirs. Trauma may have taken the past, but it ought not to receive your present and your future as well.
Through different personal stories, therapeutic stages, and different resources, the author takes the reader through the very self-same journey that assisted her with leaving an abusive situation, discovering who she was once more, and healing so much of herself after going through religious trauma. If she can do it the reader can do it. Tia Levings shares her incredible story in the hopes that others may benefit from her experiences in a fascinating book that you won’t want to miss.
