By the Book is a 2018 novel by Julia Sonneborn. If you have been looking for a new story to read that is original as well as entertaining, be sure to check out this story and see what you think!

Anne Corey is an English professor who is doing everything that they can to make tenure. Then she finds out that her former fiancé has just accepted a position as the president of her college. This means that he is also going to be her new boss, which is the worst idea ever. Can she get around it in this retelling of Persuasion, the classic by Jane Austen?

Anne Corey has a feeling deep down inside that she is about to get schooled. She works as an English professor residing in California, and she wants nothing more than to try and land a position to get on the tenure track at her college, a highly coveted place to be. The only thing that she has to do in order to achieve this is to get her own book deal, nail down a promotion, and just like that she will be in.

Things change when Adam Martinez appears on the scene. Not only was he the first love that Anne fell for, but he also was the man that she was engaged to marry. They were going to walk down the aisle together and live happily ever after in married bliss, and that all fell apart. But now somehow he has made his way into her life again as the new president of the college and she is going to have to deal with him all over again.

This wasn’t supposed to happen this way. Once Anne had him out of her life, she had fully expected that they would just not cross paths again. Instead he is here on her home turf, and worse than that, he outranks her. She can do this, though. All she has to do is come up with a strategy that will work and keep to it. It’s as simple as that.

Anne thinks that it shouldn’t be too hard when it comes to keeping herself distracted, her grand plan. She knows that she has a book that she has to write, she’s got a father who is getting older who needs her help to assist with being taken care of, and there is also a new romance that is starting to develop with the writer in residence for the college, who is far more attractive than he ought to be.

It all seems like a good enough strategy to keep herself occupied, and the professor thinks that it should work. But it seems like wherever she goes, Adam is there. He’s just there, standing there, as handsome, sexy and smart as he has ever been.

As the school year goes on, feelings that have been buried for a long time start to come to the surface. Anne is starting to get very curious about whether she might finally be able to get another chance at love. Could this be the start of something new?

This is a story that is incredibly smart. It’s funny and full of heart, and an ode to the classic written by Jane Austen but with a sharp modern twist that readers will love. It fully goes into what can happen when we encounter the demons and ghosts of our past, and what happens when they end up being not so bad after all.
