Geo Rutherford is an American educator, content creator and author.
She made her way into the literary world after a long career that was all about art education. She works at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a lecturer and is also a Visual Arts Director at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Her work has been featured and shown at literary festivals, book stores, and museums around the country. She also speaks on the intersection between science and art.
She has been fascinated with lakes for a long time, something that was first started by her artistic practice. She began sharing her fascination with the world and got a lot of attention when she began sharing content to TikTok. “Spooky Lakes” came from a thirty-one day series in October that helped make up Spooky Lake Month, her own creation that now has millions of views on Instagram and TikTok.
She also hangs out on her own spooky lake located in Sauk City, Wisconsin. She shares her home with Padfoot, her dog. She likes making videos that feature toxic lakes, unusual ice formations, shipwrecks, and hydrological phenomena.
The author has a BFA from Eastern Michigan University and graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee with an MFA. She hears from parents and teachers that her content has the ability to spark curiosity in students and has inspired various conversations revolving around the environment and science. She also co-chairs #whyoumatter, a non-profit.
Outside of illustrating books, Geo works on environmental issues related to the Great Lakes. As such, she creates unique artist’s books, prints, and large-scale mixed media works that look into themes such as impermanence, invasiveness, and different Great Lakes ecosystem aspects that are unseen. You can find her writing, painting, or looking into her next mystery.
Spooky Lakes: 25 Strange and Mysterious Lakes That Dot Our Planet is a 2024 book by Geo Rutherford. The TikTok phenomenon and educator who created “Spooky Lake Month” brings readers a fascinating nonfiction book that features different unusual lakes from all over the globe.
If you have always had a fascination for lakes or are open to having one, this is a great book for you. Some of the creepiest and strangest wonders on the Earth can be found deep below the surface. For example, there is the Tanzanian Lake Natron, a briny lake that has a makeup so severe that its waters are capable of mummifying any creature that is unlucky enough to touch its surface. There is also the Venezuelan tidal bay Lake Maracaibo, where a storm that is constantly going sends multiple lightning bolts into the water, and Lake Superior, whose bottom holds the preserved crew of the USS Kamloops, gone missing in 1921.
This is a fantastic book for school-aged or adult readers. You’ll find out more about the science of hydrology and also learn more about how deeper knowledge of the natural world is important to being able to protect it form climate change, pollution, and more. Full of research and entirely new content, this book has lots of watercolor illustrations that you’ll love, taking you on a journey through the various waters of the world.
