Kay L. Moody is a successful published author known for her fantasy stories for young adults.
Whether you’re a young adult reader or someone that is older that loves to read YA (YA is not just for those ‘of a certain age’ anymore– thanks to the advent of series like Twilight and The Hunger Games which proved YA books could be for a wider audience, not just young adults but everyone), Moody is the author of several fantasy series that you won’t want to miss out on.
Kay writes books that have slow burn romance plots, expansive world building, mythical creatures, plots, twists, and more. She loves to write and read about strong female characters and also loves books and the color pink. She really likes to go into magical worlds where the characters can overcome their deepest struggles.
The author says that books have always been there for her, providing her with a way to escape from the world and go on journeys that she wouldn’t be able to go on in reality. They have also taught her how to overcome things, both good and bad. She has gone through difficult moments, including one bad experience that was horrible to go through but has helped to make her who she is today.
At twelve years old, Kay’s parents both unfortunately passed away as a result of a very bad car accident. Prior to this she liked to play pretend games, whether a tiger hunting or a princess trying to escape a witch, or pretending to be an adventurer with a cat sidekick who went from town to town, where they would solve problems.
When she lost her parents, pretend games became a sanctuary for Kay. Her aunt and uncle took her in, along with her four siblings. She also had new siblings in her six cousins. She turned to writing, something that her mom had also done. Stories let her come up with worlds where characters could overcome the same things she was struggling with. She realized later that the hero in her stories was usually an orphan, just like she was.
Her own stories helped her, but so did stories written by others. They would let her escape reality when it was too much. She read books like Anne of Green Gables, Jane Eyre, and Harry Potter. All of the books had heroes who won over evil because they chose to do good. She identified with the struggles of these characters and liked that the books taught her that life might be hard and full of bad things, but it does not mean that happy endings can’t happen. Books have been there for her and now she is happy to be able to share stories of her own with the readers.
Kay has gone from reading books to writing some of her own. Her stories often feature strong heroines and some type of slow burn romance. Many of her books have magical creatures, world building, enemies to lovers romance tropes, and more.
Today, she is married and has four sons with her husband. They live together in the western part of the United States.
Flame and Crystal Thorns is the first book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns series by Ray L. Moody. If you love a good second chance romance meets fantasy story and heroines who find their inner strength, read this book and see what you think.
Chloe is a human apothecary, and Quintus is a fae warrior who broke her heart in the past. But that was the past, and today he needs her to help him. Chloe is very skilled and wants to stay in the mortal realm, as she feels that she belongs there. Quintus is a fae from the past who turns up and wants her to come back to Faerie, but she refuses to. Then she discovers that a group of mortals imprisoned a whole castle that was full of fae, which included her older sister.
In trying to save the fae, she does a ritual that gives her access to strong magic. The only drawback is that it ties her to Quintus through this process. Chloe can’t use magic without touching him, so in the end her wits and even her heart end up getting tested, something that she didn’t see coming.
Affections that she thought had gone are still around. She’s scared that she’s not strong and can’t save anyone, something she thinks about with every action she takes. Can she find the boldness inside herself to save her sister? Will she fall for Quintus again? Read this book to find out!
Shadow and Crystal Thorns is the second book in the Fae and Crystal Thorns series by Ray L. Moody. Romance and fantasy combine with adventure in this YA sequel in the series that sees the fae and the mortals squaring off to get the same land.
Chloe is in Faerie, but she’s just going to stay there long enough to beat the mortals, who are doing everything that they can to try and get the land for themselves. She’s not certain that she wants to go back to the mortal realm. Quintus would be thrilled, as the handsome fae wants her to stay and keeps asking her to do so.
Worse than that, winning over the mortals becomes harder each day as their numbers keep on growing. Chloe does end up finding out why they want the land. She’s a mortal and so it’s tough for her to argue against them. But the only way that they’ll end up taking Faerie is if they take it back from the fae.
When Chloe starts to understand that both sides ought to have what they’re after, alliances start blurring. In this conflict, only one of them is able to come out on top. Will the mortals end up getting what they want? Or will they be incensed because the fae end up victorious? Will Chloe end up wanting one to win out more than the other? Read the second in this series by Kay L. Moody to find out!
