Many people consider him to be the individual who transformed the city of Philadelphia into a tourist destination thanks to the Rocky steps being there. The popularity that Stallone enjoys there has resulted in a statue being made of his Rocky character, which was put permanently as a cultural landmark close to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In 2007, a statue of Rocky was also erected in a Serbian village. The film has become part of the National Film Registry and has had its film props put in the Smithsonian Museum as a national treasure.

Rocky Stories: Tales of Love, Hope, and Happiness at America’s Most Famous Steps is a 2006 book by Sylvester Stallone. If you are a fan of the Rocky story, you’ll love this book by Michael Vitez, photographed by Tom Gralish and with a foreword written by Sylvester Stallone himself.

Vitez and Gralish spent a total of a year visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art just so that they could find stories of the Rocky Runners. These are people who come from different places all over the world just for the purposes of running up the most famous steps in America to imitate what Stallone did as Rocky in the movie.

People make this voyage to look for inspiration, celebrate an accomplishment, mark a new beginning, find the backdrop for romance, or just because they are huge fans of the movie. As one runner was able to express, it ‘gives you the feeling that anything is possible’.

The authors have scratched at the surface of a cultural phenomenon that continues to endure. This one focuses on Philadelphia. Despite this, it is an American and even an international rite of passage. The book comes with 52 different profiles and 100 photographs in color. They are paired with a foreword from the actor himself and different interviews conducted with Bill Conti (composer), Garrett Brown (cameraman), and John G. Avildsen (director).

As Sly says in his foreword, you can’t ‘borrow Superman’s cape’ or ‘use the Jedi laser sword’. But the actual steps from Rocky as ‘accessible’, and when people are standing up there, they ‘kind of have a piece of the Rocky pie’. Different publications rave about this book, from San Francisco Chronicle to Sports Illustrated to Entertainment Weekly.

So many different people have loved this movie, and it’s easy to see why. But now fans of the film have an all-new way to enjoy the legacy of Rocky, and to see how other fans of the film Rocky have appreciated and interacted with the famous steps that were included in the movie in a scene that stands out in memory and has stood the test of time.

As former Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell notes, the Rocky steps ‘have become a special place for tourists and Philadelphians alike’ as nearly everyone that comes there wants to be able to say that ‘they ran up the Rocky steps’. The enthusiasm of the visitors and the impression that Rocky has made on audiences from all over the world is captured perfectly in Rocky Stories, a book that readers are sure to want to experience for themselves.

Whether you’ve always dreamed of running up those stairs yourself or just want to see how and why others have made their way to the steps, it’s all here. Michael Vitez is a Pulitzer Prize winner and Tom Gralish has been a part of the Philadelphia Inquirer as an editor and photographer and has also won a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography.
