Rootless is a 2023 novel by Krystle Zara Appiah. If you have been looking for a new original story to read, this is a great pick for you! The story follows a marriage in crisis and poses the query to readers whether one can ever find roots in a home that is on the verge of collapse.
The setting is London in the spring and in the afternoon, Sam is taking the stairs of his apartment two at a time. He is in a state of emergency. There is over a thousand pounds that has gone missing from the shared bank account that he has with his wife Efe. All the calls that he is making are all going to voicemail.
Sam finally manages to get through to someone and that is when he finds out that Efe is about five thousand miles away. Their toddler is still there and is looking around and asking where Efe is.
Efe and Sam first met when they were teens and they were on their way to university. It appeared that everyone around them knew that these two were meant to be together. Efe had just come to the United Kingdom from Ghana and is struggling with the pressure of her parents’ expectations. She was able to find some level of comfort in Sam, who is idealistic but extremely focused.
Sam was stable in his life and was working hard to form a law career. He had a vision for their future that he was not straying from. Efe found the vision suitable at the time, but now a decade has gone by and she is finding it insufferable. They may appear to be perfect from the outside, but if you look closer, you can start to see the cracks.
Efe and Sam eventually find out that they are pregnant, something that is totally unplanned. While the two theoretically should be on the same page, the two of them find themselves on different sides of things. Sam finds that being a father is all that he had dreamed that it would be, while Efe feels like she is in a nightmare.
When something new comes up, the pair must at last face just how different they would like their lives to be. Efe disappears, dealing with the demands of being a mother while dealing with the dreams that she had slipping away from her until at last it is all too much to take.
This story is about love as well as sacrifice and motherhood. It shows what can happen after a marriage falls apart, which can lead to two different people finding out what they want in the end and figuring out if they still want each other. Can the pair reconcile their differences or are they about to find out that they’re better off without each other? Read this book to find out!
