Whether you’re on the go, filling time doing errands, or hanging out at home, this Borgesian literary debut about the frayed borders that exist between our minds and bodies is one that can’t be missed.

Main character Ada is one who lives much of life on her own. She spends a lot of her days hanging out in the swimming pool of her London apartment building. Sometimes she visits with her cousin Francesca and meets her friends, and all of them chat, drink, and offer up invitations that Ada decides to ignore.

Ada has parents but they have recently gotten divorced, which happened after her father decided to put more time into becoming a bodybuilder. The man spends his days working out at the gym. The place is bright and crowded, warm with people close by, and calls her on occasion so that he can bring up small concerns about the well-being of his daughter.

One day Ada meets a man by the pool who goes by the name of Atticus. Even though they have never met before, Ada feels an intimate connection between the two of them. She feels that they share a life, but it is in a way that she finds difficult to explain. Slowly, Ada becomes estranged not only from her familiar surroundings but from reality too. It’s like seeing what she looks like through a mirror with little pieces of it falling away.

Her mother asks Ada to come along with her on a remote Greek holiday and through that Ada is jolted from the physical world and into an artificial new environment, one created and designed for her by a strange and maybe even otherworldly force.

This first novel pivots with effect into the speculative and the surreal as the reader moves through the various experiences that Ada has on life. This book looks into the mystery of why we exist and the relationships that we hold with others and ourselves. When a person lives in isolation in the space between body and mind, are the connections that we have with all of those around us just projections of ourselves and where do they come from if not?

Albertine Clarke brings readers a book that they won’t want to miss, with subtle but precise and confident writing that is unlike any other author out there today. Check out The Body Builders to witness it for yourself as a reader in all of its glory!
