While she makes it look like something that comes naturally to her, the truth is that a huge amount of mental energy and effort goes into presenting her life to the world.

All of a sudden she wakes up in the reality of 1855, cold, dirty, and very scared. She’s got to figure out whether this living nightmare is some complex hoax, some type of reality show, or something that is going to be even more sinister in this debut novel that you won’t want to miss. The woman says that her name was Natalie Heller Mills, and when it came to being alive, much like Martha Stewart did she had perfected the art of having a perfect life and in turn living perfectly.

Natalie has a pretty traditional lifestyle and she isn’t afraid to share it and show it off. She lives in a cute rustic farmhouse that are all the rage, she is married to a handsome cowboy as a husband, and she has six children who are all really unique, charming, and fun. That’s what her viewers and followers see, and it is intentionally curated this way.

There are also producers and nannies working behind the scenes, her kitchen has fridges and ovens that are industrial grade, and her husband is also involved in politics to the extent that he’s the heir to a political dynasty. There is a lot overall that goes into all of this as she smiles and shows her followers around.

Natalie has eight million followers and what they don’t know is not going to end up hurting them. Then there’s The Angry Women, who are the coastal privileged Ivy League haters who say that she is an anti-feminist iconoclast. They are all rife with jealousy, in her opinion. Natalie is not just living a good life, she is living the perfect life and happens to be constructing an empire out of it. There’s nothing wrong with monetizing that.

One morning, she ends up waking up and finding that she is in a life that is not hers. Everything in her life is familiar, but she also feels like something is off. With her kids, her husband, and her home– it all seems strange even though it seems to look nearly the same.

Her kitchen is being warmed thanks to a fire over electricity. The children are strange and dirty. Her husband who doesn’t really get his hands dirty appears to be actively farming and competent at it. Natalie is wondering whether she’s lost her mind or has somehow been transported somewhere else. She remembers posting photos of her jam onto social media and now she’s in a situation where she’s gathering firewood and washing clothes by hand.

She wonders whether she’s gone back in time or is somehow on a reality show. Maybe she’s being tested by some sort of entity with powers beyond her ability to understand. But then when she is in the woods and gets a horrible injury, she starts to realize that this is not her life. Upon having this realization, she now knows that she’s going to have to get out of here any way that she can.

Will she be able to escape and get back to the life that she actually recognizes? Natalie never realized how much she really needed the modern things instead of pretending like she was homesteading like a champ. This is an incredibly engaging novel that has its little scary moments but also manages to be very funny. Just like salty and sweet with snacking, there is a perfect balance to be struck!
