Liberty of the Imagination: Aesthetic Theory, Literary Form, and Politics in the Early United States is a 2012 book by Edward Cahill. If you are interested in nonfiction and like books like this, you’re going to want to check out Liberty and see what you think!
Inside of this book, the author does a lot of work to get to the bottom of the impact of 18th century theories of the imagination. These include various philosophical ideas that revolve around aesthetic pleasure and more, and discover their impact on American writing from the Revolutionary era all the way to the early 19th century.
American writers were not too busy with topics such as commerce or politics or too concerned about pleasure’s morality. They would consistently turn themselves to the ideas of the imagination so that they could more deeply comprehend natural and artistic objects, political institutions, and social formations.
Cahill puts forth the argument that conceptual tensions inside of aesthetic theory rendered it to be an evocative language when it comes to being able to describe that challenges of American political liberty while also taking on the different contradictions offered up by nation formation. The analyses that he has done show the central nature of aesthetics when it comes to key different political debates that took place during various stages of U.S. history.
The book also looks into the relevance of aesthetic ideas and extends to a range of different literary genres. These include novels, poetry, political writing, natural history writing, and literary criticism. The author makes connections between the intellectual and political history and the (often idiosyncratic) formal tendencies of early national texts. This helps show the richness of a literary tradition that is underappreciated as well as a unique account of the connection between Revolutionary writing and 19th century literary romanticism.
This is a great book if you have been feeling that you want to learn more about a certain topic or just be more informed in general! Cahill does a great job of taking something that could be complicated and bringing it to the reader in terms and ways that they can understand, making American history more accessible for everyone. Pair with your favorite hot cup of coffee or tea, find a comfortable place, and see what this book has to offer!
