The Nazis Next Door: How America Became a Safe Haven for Hitler’s Men is a 2014 book by Eric Lichtblau. You may think that you know all there is to know on this topic, but find out the history behind the series The Hunters (which stars the fantastic actor Al Pacino) in this book that finds its foundation in incredibly well-done research. Find out the story of how America ended up becoming the home for not just one but thousands of Nazi war criminals, a true story that proves that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.
For the first time ever, government records and interviews that were once kept secret are now revealed. They are able to show a more complete picture and put together the story of the thousands of Nazis who ended up coming to the United States after the second world war and quietly started their new lives. Whether they were concentration camp guards or high level officers, many of them got in on their own as refugees but some also got in thanks to assistance from the government.
The FBI, the CIA, and the military all went to work putting Hitler’s former minions in positions as spies, intelligence assets, and scientists and engineers. Their histories were all whitewashed and it was just years after they had come over that private detectives and government prosecutors started attempting to try and figure out the hidden Nazis. Relying on newly-disclosed documents and many interviews, the author shows this part of postwar history that many don’t know.
Salon called this book ‘Disturbing’, while the Chicago Tribune referred to it as ‘Engaging’. It was also a New York Times bestseller in the espionage category. Whether you’re a big history buff or just love interesting nonfiction, this true to life story is too detailed and immersive to miss out on. Add it to your library and find out more about one of the more intriguing aspects of history that you may not have known about.
American Reich: A Murder in Orange County, Neo-Nazis, and a New Age of Hate is a 2026 book by Eric Lichtblau. Eric is well known for writing nonfiction stories and this is another interesting story that readers will not want to miss.
This book was an Editor’s Choice in the New York Times Book Review. If you thought that the bestseller The Nazis Next Door was riveting, then this book is going to be right up your alley. It’s like a Dateline episode inside a book and the compelling thing is that it really happens and takes into account the resurgence of white supremacy and hatred as it takes place in Orange County, California, which is apparently some type of ‘ground zero’ for radical extremism.
This is the story of a murder that takes place there that exposes the roots of violent bigotry and explores where it serves as a bellwether of sorts for the entire country. The story in question takes place in early 2018. Blaze Bernstein was an Ivy League student who was home from college for the night and ended up sneaking out of his parents’ Orange County home.
Outside in the car waiting for him was a classmate from high school. Sam Woodward was the type of guy who Blaze had recalled as being a bigoted guy who tended to brood and stay on his own. However, they had been flirting through messaging for months and at last had gotten together on this night. Sam had gotten Blaze, who was gay, to go out with him for a meetup. But that would also be the last time that he was ever seen alive.
Inside this book, the investigative journalist tells about Blaze’s life and its tragic conclusion to show the epidemic of hate going on in Southern California and the nation as a whole. Orange County has long been a place where the ultra-right felt comfortable but also had been changing in the years leading up to the young student’s disappearance. The area was diversifying, which many of its white residents did not like. Opposed to the changes was the neo-Nazi groups in America, which had also gained the new member of Sam Woodward in one of the outlets.
American Reich shows how the O.C. has exported racial hatred to the country and the world, this story is woven together with different stories from across the country and shows what this place and the paths of two of its residents are able to show about America and whether there is any hope of healing. Read this book to absorb every fascinating word!
