Francis King was a published British novelist as well as a short story writer and poet. He was also named a CBE (Commander of the Order).

Francis was born in Abelboden, Switzerland. He was brought up in India and attended the Shrewsbury School and Balliol College, Oxford. As World War II was going on he served as a conscientious objector. He left Oxford so that he could work on the land. He completed his degree in 1949 and worked for the British Council. He would get posted around Europe and Kyoto. Francis put his resignation in order to write on a full time basis in 1964.

The author is a past winner of the W. Somerset Maugham Prize for The Dividing Stream, his 1951 novel. Francis has also won the Katherine Mansfield Short Story Prize. He is also a President Emeritus of International PEN and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Francis has also received some royal awards, as he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1979 and then six years later was appointed a Commander of the Order.

This is the tale of the main character Antonio Valli, who is a young Italian professor and very smart. He makes his way to do a year’s worth of research at a prestigious university. He lodges with Dick Thompson, who is a middle aged novelist who is doing quite well. The good looks and his impulsive but likable character pulls Dick in and has him entranced with Valli.

Valli is the type of person who wants to be loved and admired and has a craving for attention from everyone that he runs into. He requires an audience to perform to and discovers this at the university but especially finds it when he is spending time with Dick.

Dick Thompson ends up falling completely for his lodger. Valli is charming but he is also attracted to women. What comes after is a relationship that is destined to disaster. What will happen between the two and can Dick come back from this if it is a mistake? Read this book to find out!
