Jon McGoran
Jon McGoran is an American writer who works in science fiction and mystery thrillers for young adults. He builds his characters and main figures with careful attention, making them feel like real people a reader might know. His storytelling stays clear and direct, avoiding fancy language or over the top drama. This approach keeps the pages turning without ever feeling slow or forced.
McGoran has a clear skill for creating plots that pull a reader in from the first chapter. He does not rely on shock value or big twists that come from nowhere. Instead he sets up small clues and quiet moments that build into a larger puzzle. This makes his books entertaining because the reader gets to solve parts of the mystery alongside the hero.
Another strength is how he writes action and suspense without making things feel fake or exaggerated. His young adult novels stay grounded even when the science fiction ideas get big. Readers can trust that the story will make sense and that the hero will act like a real person under pressure. That mix of honest character work and smart plotting is what makes McGoran a writer worth following.
He entertains readers around the world by staying true to his own voice as a writer. He does not chase trends or try to copy what is popular at the moment. Instead he writes stories that feel honest to him, which means they also feel fresh and unexpected to an audience. That honesty crosses borders easily, because real writing does not need translation to be understood.
His books mix science fiction ideas with mystery thriller pacing in a way that feels natural to him. He does not force two genres together for the sake of being different. He simply writes what he likes to read, and that personal enjoyment shows up on every page. Readers in different countries pick up his work and find the same clear storytelling and grounded characters. That consistency builds trust over time.
Jon McGoran shows no signs of slowing down in his writing career. He continues to develop new projects that blend young adult science fiction with mystery thriller elements. Readers can expect more of his signature grounded characters and clever plots in the years ahead. The future holds additional stories from him, all made with the same honest and entertaining approach.
Early and Personal Life
Jon McGoran grew up in Philadelphia, in the United States. As a young person he developed an interest in reading and writing like many authors do. That early love for stories eventually pushed him toward creating his own books.
He found inspiration partly through connecting with other writers. McGoran is a founding member of the Philadelphia Liars Club, which is a group of published authors who help each other write better. This kind of support system allowed him to grow as an author without working alone.
When he is not writing novels or short fiction, McGoran keeps busy with other writing related jobs. He works as a freelance writer and as a developmental editor for other people’s books. He also co hosts a writing podcast called The Liars Club Oddcast, which shows how much he enjoys talking about the craft of storytelling.
Writing Career
Jon McGoran has written several books under his own name. These include the ecological thrillers Drift, Dust Up, and Deadout from Tor/Forge. He also wrote The Dead Ring, which is based on the television show The Blacklist, from Titan Books.
Also writing under the pen-name of D. H. Dublin, McGoran authored forensic thrillers from Penguin Books. Those titles include Body Trace, Blood Poison, and Freezer Burn. He continues to write new work, so his career is not finished yet.
The Price of Everything
Jon McGoran’s science fiction book The Price of Everything came out on April 8, 2025. Solaris is the publisher behind this particular title.
Corporations have fallen, and gangsters are killed, but no one dares to cross the Couriers Guild. Ten years ago Armand Pierce took a job as a courier with a titanium cuff grafted to his wrist bone, and his attaché case became his whole life. He can run, fight, or kill if needed, but the package must get where it is going because the Guild guarantees delivery, and after the internet went down in the Cyber Wars, every business depends on that promise. When Pierce reaches his latest stop and finds his case empty with the payload missing, he realizes something strange is happening, something that has already killed three couriers and threatens to upend the global order, so he must solve the mystery before the Guild catches up to him.
Readers would likely find this story hard to put down. The high stakes and the main character’s dangerous job make the plot move fast. Anyone who likes action and mystery would probably enjoy the ride. The book seems to offer a fun and tense reading experience.
Deadout
Jon McGoran’s mystery thriller Deadout was published on August 5, 2014. Forge Books released this title as the second book in the Detective Doyle Carrick series.
Doyle Carrick and Nola Watkins visit an island off New England to fix their troubled relationship. Nola works at an organic farm hit by a bee killing plague, where her boss is a rich annoying man named Teddy. Teddy’s estranged father pays Doyle to keep his son safe. A biotech company called Stoma arrives with genetically modified super bees. Protesters clash with hired thugs. Doyle learns other living things are being modified too. After a researcher named Annalisa sees her coworkers vanish, she and Doyle uncover a dark secret. Doyle races to stop Stoma before its plot spreads from the island to the world.
Many will find this mystery thriller hard to set down. The mix of a troubled relationship and a deadly secret keeps the story moving fast. The island setting and the biotech plot add real tension. Anyone who likes suspense with some science thrown in would probably enjoy this book.
