Main character Herrick Hall is the type to not let anything go without giving it a fight, and this extends to his masters’ dead wives. Josephine Carter finds that dallying with another woman causes her reputation to fall apart. Left among the shambles, her punishment is to be banished to an isolated manor to become a lady’s companion serving Herrick’s mistress.
Lady Nora Blake is a woman who is capricious and is headstrong. She spends many of her days dealing with a strange illness and in her nights witnessing her impending death over and over. Kept at her side, Josephine feels that life could not possibly get any worse for her, but then she ends up meeting the Herrick wives.
Ghosts move through the halls and come into Josephine’s dreams, and they are trapped there forever in the fury of their last dying wish. She wants nothing more than to destroy Herrick and all that exist under its roof. Josephine wants to escape using any type of means, but that might end up changing when she and Nora fall in love.
Josephine and Nora have to work together in order to take on Herrick’s curse to that they can fight their way to freedom. However, little do they know that Herrick has claimed them already to be his next ghostly brides. Now they are about to find out that the house and the wives are not going to be able to give them up without shedding some blood. What will happen in the end? Read this novel to find out.
Death in Verse is a 2026 novel by Julie Lew. If you have been keeping an eye out for something that is going to breathe a little new life into your bookshelf, check out this story and see what you think!
Bronte Cade’s mother has gone missing and in the course of her vanishing the only clue that she has left serves as an invitation to a retreat for magical poets. She really wants to find some answers and is willing to go to extremes to get it. This leads to her attending in her mother’s place by pretending to be Dr. Sappho Cade.
Then Bronte arrives at the Radley School of Poetry. Once she gets there, she finds that the island has been totally abandoned with the exception of six other poets (who are totally confused), one line of a poem that has gone unfinished, and an anonymous host who puts out an ultimatum through an enchanted gramophone. If they complete the spell, they might be able to go home on the next ferry. But if they end up failing, then they will die.
There’s also another issue to deal with: the fact that Bronte isn’t magical. Escape might end up being impossible. The body count for them all is going up while her mother is still missing. Bronte feels that she has no other choice but to form an alliance with Marlowe Fang, someone who is brilliant but infuriating. Together they try to unmask their host before Bronte’s exposed or even ends up being lined up to become the next victim.
Underneath the sinister scheme of the host is a plot that is even more insidious. One that has been carefully crafted throughout the decades. It bleeds beyond the Radley shores like an ink stain and no one has clean hands at all, not even the people Bronte feels that she can trust the most. What will happen in the end?
