Early and Personal Life

As a child in Houston, Texas, where she was born on September 16, 1952, Lisa Gracia Tuttle developed a natural curiosity about books and storytelling. In the early 1970s, she worked with fellow writer George R. R. Martin on a book called Windhaven, which gave her early experience in crafting a longer narrative. She also spent several years living with writer Steven Utley before making a big move in January 1981 from the United States to London, England. There, she married British author Christopher Priest, and though that marriage ended in 1987, the relationships and moves all added to her growth as a writer.

By 1990, Tuttle had relocated to a rural part of Scotland called Torinturk, where she now lives with her second husband, editor Colin Murray, and their daughter, Emily. Surrounding herself with family and open countryside seems to have given her space to keep writing at her own pace. Writing Career

While a student at The Kinkaid School in Piney Point Village, Texas, Tuttle first began putting stories on paper. At Lamar High School in Houston, she jumped into science fiction fandom and launched a fanzine called Mathom for the Houston Science Fiction Society. During her time at Syracuse University in New York, she contributed to a university fanzine titled Tomorrow And… as well as several alternative newspapers.

The year 1971 brought Tuttle to the Clarion Writer’s Workshop at Tulane University in New Orleans. Shortly after that experience, she made her first sale with a short story named “Stranger in the House.” That piece was printed in 1972 within Clarion II, an anthology put together by Robin Wilson. She received a BA in English Literature in 1974, relocated to Austin, Texas, and spent five years as a journalist for the daily paper Austin American Statesman, all the while continuing to develop as an author with many more stories ahead.

My Death
