The Artist is a 2025 novel by Lucy Steeds. This book was shortlisted for the Waterstones Debut Prize 2025, longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2025, and was a Radio 4 Book at Bedtime.
It was a book that had many fellow authors putting their praise for the book into words. Author of The Safekeep Yael van der Wouden called it a ‘furiously romantic, sun-drenched mystery’ that will ‘leave you yearning in every sense of the word’. The Times also liked the book, calling the author ‘one to watch’, while the Guardian called it a ‘Dexterous and powerful’ and ‘a hugely accomplished portrait’.
Telegraph also liked the book, referring to Steeds as the ‘year’s most lauded debut novelist’. Daily Mail called it a ‘blaze of a book’ that is ‘passionate and quietly powerful’. Mail on Sunday says this story ‘will transport you to idyllic, sun-drenched Provence in 1920’ and the Washington Post described it as having ‘imagery as lush as an oil painting’.
The book was also picked as one of the Best Books for 2025 by the Stylist and Good Housekeeping. Good Housekeeping described the depictions of the landscape, meals eaten, and art created as ‘Enthralling’, calling it ‘so rich and evocative it’s as if you’re there’.
The place is Provence and the year is 1920. Main character Ettie is moving through a remote farmhouse, quietly doing her work to make the conditions that allow for her uncle’s artistic genius.
Joseph aspires to be a journalist and has received an invitation to the house. He thinks that he might be able to make his name through interviewing the painter Edouard Tartuffe, an artist who is famously reclusive.
It’s true that people out there have their secrets. Using the cover of darkness, Ettie has spent many years cultivating hers. Over the course of a very hot summer, everyone’s real colors will be shown. Ettie is ready to be seen by others, and it doesn’t matter to her if it sets the world on fire.
Readers will have to get to the end to find out what happens! Pick up a copy of this book and see why authors such as Sarah Perry are calling it ‘an assured and atmospheric debut’. Joanna Quinn is the author of The Whalebone Theatre and called it an ‘impressively assured debut which asks questions about all those who are painted over by history’.
This is an incredible novel that author Elizabeth Macneal says ‘brims with intrigue, hope and yearning’. Check it out for yourself to see why people like Seth Insua are urging those out there to ‘Read this book!’.
