Mona Tewari is an American published author.

She has always had a fascination when it comes to the many different ways that the narratives of various legends and histories are able to influence the way that we view the present. She attended Caltech and graduated with two degrees in biology and philosophy. Mona then went on to dental school, which she completed and went on to residency and a master’s degree from UCSF.

She then became part of a pediatric dental practice and practiced as a pediatric dentist for years. She thought she would be there for a long time, but apparently life had other plans in store for her and due to health issues Mona had to take a break from practicing. She then decided to try out writing fiction, which was also a great way to show representation in media that she didn’t necessarily have growing up as the daughter of two immigrants from India, and show to her daughters that they belong in every world.

The author is married. She lives in New England in the gorgeous Berkshires area with her husband, their daughters, and their dogs.

Burn the Sea is a 2026 novel by Mona Tewari. If you’ve been looking for a new read that is going to keep you engaged throughout, this might be the book for you. It has been selected as a Goodreads Editor’s pick, a Debut Novel that Samantha Shannon is really excited about in 2026, and was one of Book Riot’s ‘Best New Releases’.

In order to protect her homeland, a queen is going to have to gear up in order to take on her people’s historic enemy, fight, and win this battle once and for all. Does she have what it takes?

Main character Abbakka Chowta is someone who never thought that she would become queen one day. She is the youngest of Ullal’s two rajkumaris and has spent many years going through intensive combat training so that she could become her sister’s blade. When the Porcugi want to lay claim to Ullal, it won’t be too long before her destiny and her world are turned upside down.

The Porcugi are monstrous beings, half-men and half-snake who make their way from the sea and attack. They have not been glimpsed in Ullal ever since they launched their invasion (which failed) over fifty years ago. That does not mean that they are not able to return, and that is exactly what is about to happen.

The Porcugi have come back with a vengeance and they’re also offering a choice to others to either pay the tithes or go through complete devastation. Abbakka’s definitions of subterfuge, strength, and statecraft are all going to be tested.

Could it be that getting married to a neighboring king could give her the resources that are required in order to give her people some much-needed protection? Or is she going to have to end up watching as her homeland is crushed underneath the waves of those who would colonize them?

This is an incredible historical fantasy that is full of intricate lush details. It takes the Portuguese attacks on South India in the sixteenth century and the story of a real life queen who had fierceness for days and re-imagines it into a fictional world that is just as intriguing. This is a celebration of female power that explores how valuable freedom really is and what lengths must be gone to in order to preserve it.
