Sam Beckbessinger is a successful published author. She is known for writing books like Manage Your Money Like a F*cking Grownup and her novel Girls of Little Hope, which was written along with Dale Halvorsen.

She wrote an interactive story that was about climate change that was called ‘Survive the Century’ that was featured in places such as New Scientist and Gizmodo. Sam teaches creative writing as a teacher at Bath Spa University.

Donna, Rae and Kat are all able to help each other out and keep each other sane living in this dull town with their teen girl friendships, making magazines and doing some sleuthing into the longest running mysteries in the town: about a lost gold mine and why Ronnie Gaskins decided to burn his parents alive a decade ago.

The hunt that they are on will take them to a hidden cave, and the shocking thing is that only two of them are going to be able to make it back alive. Donna’s a troublemaker and she says that she can’t remember anything, while Rae wants to get away from the memories that she has of what happens. Meanwhile, her religious family is pushing to get answers from her. Then there’s Kat, the wannabe writer who gained weight to rebel against the beauty pageant dreams that her mother had and she’s gone missing and is assumed to be dead or else out there on her own in the woods.

The police are circling and Kat’s mother Marybeth is frantic. She starts looking into some things on her own and as she does, Rae and Donna are going to have to go back to the cave and might end up finding a secret that is so powerful that no one who comes into contact with it will be the same again. She has a promotion that is coming up and above all the time is very inconvenient to be dealing with the symptoms of midlife. She’s dealing with coarse hair in different places, insomnia, hot flashes, losing time, finding stains that appear to be blood on most if not all of her clothing, and the super unusual practice of howling at the moon.

Her doctor diagnoses her and says that it’s perimenopause. But she isn’t so sure. It appears to be a different 28 day cycle that she is going through and that is taking hold. This one involves fur and teeth and also happens to involve a lot of rage.

The troubles in her life seemed to be so big to her before, but with this happening, it all seems like small potatoes all of a sudden. She’s dealing with hot flashes, a family that never seems to thank her, a huge to-do list, a husband that could not be more oblivious, others getting promoted above her. Now it just seems like all of that is not as big of a deal.

Feral and original, this is the type of modern story that readers need more of! It’s nice to have an author around that explores being a female in such a fun and unique way.
