We Two Alone is a 2021 collection of stories by Jack Wang. The collection has been called utterly remarkable and deeply resonant respectively by the Pulitzer Prize-winning authors Viet Thanh Nguyen and Robert Olen Butler. This is a bold collection that dramatizes the Chinese diaspora that has gone on all over the world over the course of the past few hundred years.
The story takes place on five different continents and takes place over the course of decades. We Two Alone goes over the arc of the Chinese immigration experience and its evolution. A young laundry boy puts his life on the line pretending to be a girl so that he can play hockey in Canada in the twenties. Then a Canadian couple is caught when Shanghai gives in to violence during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Meanwhile, a family tries to buy a home in South Africa but is having trouble during the early part of apartheid. Also, a New York actor tries to keep his career alive while also wanting to reconcile with his estranged wife.
These characters in this collection are part of the diversity of the Chinese diaspora and what that represents in the past and the present. In these stories, Jack Wang turns around expectations and captures not only the hope of the millions who have gone to what they do not know to make better lives but their pain and their sacrifice. It also looks into the shifting boundaries of morality, how love can triumph and also fail, and the choices that circumstances can often push us to make. Read this collection to follow along with each individual fascinating story!
The Riveter is a 2025 novel by Jack Wang. This is a cross-cultural love story that is set against the backdrop of the Allied invasion of Europe during the Second World War. If you have been searching for something fictional that is interesting, check out this debut novel from a fresh voice in fiction and see what you potentially would have been missing!
The setting is Vancouver and the year is 1942. Josiah Chang has come to this busy city and is more than ready to start over and carve out a new life for himself. The second World War is getting going and Josiah is like many other Canadians who wants to show how loyal he is by serving his country.
However, Chinese Canadians are getting blocked from joining up in the army because there is a concern that in return for doing so they might expect citizenship. Josiah decides that he is going to go over to the shipyard. There he finds some more work as a riveter, helping to put together the ribs and the steel plates of the Victory ships.
One night Josiah is out and he sees Poppy, who is singing at a navy club. They may come from very different backgrounds but the two of them fall for the other in an instant. It isn’t too long before Josiah is starting to spend his nights at Poppy’s small wartime house. The romance is wonderful and it lasts until Poppy’s father comes over to visit. It is only then that the reality of their situation becomes more clear.
But Josiah is not going to let things fizzle out there. He is determined now more than ever to prove himself to Poppy and her parents as well as the world and show them what he is made of. He makes his way to Toronto and there he at last is presented with the chance to enlist. He rises to the occasion but it turns out that the world may be changing just as quickly as his dreams are.
Jack Wang has penned here a sweeping novel that is full of drama and heart warming moments. Is Josiah going to have to sacrifice more than he anticipated for Poppy, and will it pay off by bringing the two together? Anything could happen between the two of them and once he enlists. Check out this amazing debut from Jack Wang to follow along with this story and find out what ultimately happens in the end!
