Beating the Marriage Odds: When You Are Smart, Single, And Over 30 is a book from the 90s written by Barbara Lovenheim. A nonfiction book that is a classic guide on how to get into marriage and stay in one, especially when so many marriages end up dissolving.
This is a guide that was perfect for the time and still has some interesting tips and wisdom to share. Women today are just as career driven as they were back then, and for women who are single and want to settle down, this book provided them first hand with a plan on how they could go out and get a man.
The book also included success stories, strategies that were helpful, and special sections on dating services, personal ads, and social clubs. Much like that famous episode of Sex and the City where Carrie decides that it’s time to take her students out into the wild to get them meeting people and have them just be more available to men, this book encourages those reading it to start putting themselves out there and putting themselves in a position to get into a relationship that leads to marriage.
If you take a look at the stats, you’ll be astounded. It’s estimated that out of every two marriages that occur today, one of them is going to fail. That’s a sobering statistic no matter how you look at it. What could be the cause of such numbers and what out there can be done to get couples together and keep them that way?
This book not only asks that questions but attempts to provide some more concrete principles that illustrate how one can build and sustain a solid marriage. It talks about the most common reasons why marriages fail and gives some principles and tips so that these problems can be avoided before they develop or addressed once they have already appeared and be corrected before they go too far.
For people out there who are still looking to be married or those who are already married and want to stay that way, this is a great guide that can inspire you with examples from real life and easy to understand principles that can be applied to any marriage. This is a book that wants people to have amazing and healthy fulfilling relationships and a good marriage that stays together!
The concept is refreshing and sometimes it’s nice to go back to classic books as times may change but good solid advice about relationships stays the same. Especially these days when there are so many confident-sounding but often uninformed ‘advice experts’ online you can listen to, cut out all of the noise and return to a book that goes back to basics. Check out Beating the Marriage Odds to see what you think!
Survival in the Shadows: Seven Jews Hidden in Hitler’s Berlin is a national bestseller written by Barbara Lovenheim. This is the true story of two Jewish families who were able to make it while hiding out in the center of the Nazi capital. If you are interested in history or just enjoy a good compelling story, take a look at this book to find out more.
The time is January 1943. The four members of the Arndt family decide to go underground as a matter of necessity since they cannot get out of Germany and they do not want to be deported to Auschwitz. They are joined by Ellen Lewinsky and her mother Charlotte. Bruno Gumpel arrives a year later. They all were hiding out in a small factory close to Hitler’s bunker. They didn’t have identification cards on them or food ration stamps to get food, so they were all depending on German strangers helping them in order to survive.
The group were at last rescued by Russian soldiers in April of 1945. By that time, the members of the families were almost dead from starving. However, they still had a will to live that overcame all of their circumstances. Two months later four of them were reunited in a double wedding ceremony– Erich and Ellen and Ruth and Bruno.
This book follows along with a story that has previous to this gone untold, involving the largest group of German Jews that made it through this ordeal alive by hiding out in Berlin throughout the last and the most dangerous years of the Holocaust.
Told to the author by three real life survivors from this group, this is not only an interesting story but a portrait of the bravery of these people and what they went through, as well as an acknowledgment of the strength and the humanity of the Germans who worked so hard to keep them alive. If you’re a fan of books that draw from real life and are all the more interesting for it, give this book a try and see if it makes your list of favorite true stories!
