Turn Off the Light is a 2026 book by Jacquie Walters. If you enjoy a book that features ghost stories, this book might just be the one for you. Author of The Winter People Jennifer McMahon says that this book is going to upend ‘everything you think you know about ghost stories’.
This is the story of two different women who are living apart by centuries who are tied together with the same dark secret in this novel that is positively haunting. This book has been revealed to be a ‘delightful twist on both the haunted-house and beach-read genres’.
They say that the Devil comes through the doors that have been left open. On the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Edith serves as a healer and a woman of knowledge, as well as a woman watched. She’s picking up on things that seem off to her. Shadows are moving where they should not and whispers are moving through the dark. Edith is scared that she has somehow opened her home to the Devil and so makes a desperate choice.
Claire is someone who doesn’t really believe in ghosts but all of that is about to change. When she goes home to care for her father who is dying, she finds herself in her childhood home. But she isn’t looking around and things aren’t strange. She’s just listening.
One night without sleep goes into the next and as it does, Claire starts getting convinced that there is something beneath the floorboards that is stirring. It seems like it is something that has been waiting a long time out there to rise.
It could be that the house is haunted, and the others aren’t sure what is behind this lurking darkness. The danger gets even bigger and Edith and Claire start to find out that they are going to need the other one if they want to survive.
The only problem with this is that they have about 400 years between them, and time is running out for each of them. Will they be able to figure out what to do and can they each get the end result that they both desire? Read this compelling book from Jacquie Walters in order to find out!
