The Grift: The Downward Spiral of Black Republicans from the Party of Lincoln to the Cult of Trump is a 2024 book by Clay Cane. Equal parts history and cultural analysis, this book chronicles the nuanced history of Black Republicans.

Cane is able to lay out how Black Republicanism has been mangled by the various opportunists who ended up being apologists for racism. When the Civil War concluded, the pillars of Black Republicanism ended up serving as an equal and balanced critique of both political parties, civil rights for all Americans, reinventing an economy that was based on exploitation, and building Black communities that were thriving.

How did Black Republicanism devolve from revolutionaries such as Frederick Douglass to the puppets of the Trump era? Whether it was due to radical conservatives such as Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas or South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, they are consistently viral news and they are continuously holding up egregious laws that are being carried out at the expense of their Black brothers.

Black looks in all types of places high and low and gives cover for explicit bigotry. It may end up being one of the biggest threats to the liberation of brown and Black people. The author studies these figures as well as their tactics and by doing so is able to show the grift while also putting down a plan that can help free the future. Read this book to find out what is inside and to follow along from start to finish.

Burn Down Master’s House is a 2026 book by Clay Cane. This book was inspired by stories that were true and had long been buried, stories of people who may have been enslaved but also managed to do their best to fight back.

It’s an incredible portrait that is being painted of resistance that might be right up someone’s alley if they are fans of reading authors such as Jesmyn Ward, Colson Whitehead, and Percival Everett. From this award-winning author and journalist, check out this book if you are a fan of nonfiction and have an appreciation and hunger for high-quality nonfiction books.

This book was an instant bestseller on the New York Times and USA Today. As turmoil is going on inside of a divided nation, another fire starts to blaze with smoke coming up. Put on thanks due to individual acts of resistance among the enslaved across the American South, these seemingly disparate rebellions are also leading them to fuel the inferno of justice. As a result they are connected in ways that can often be quiet, while others find them to be explosive. As the flames get higher, they are going to rise as well.

Luke is quick, witty, and very literate. Then there’s also Henri, a man who has a spirit that is simultaneously strong and defiant. They are able together to make a bond that cannot be broken at a Virginia plantation that goes by Magnolia Row. Both of them are looking to get away from cruelty that is beyond belief. As sure as the fires of hell, Luke and Henri are going to leave their mark and they will be fueling resistance in every single life that they touch.

One of those lives that they end up touching is that belonging to Josephine. She is a young girl who is very sharp and observant and she decides to use silence– in fact, it is one of her greatest weapons. She is also a witness to the resilience displayed by Luke and Henri. As such, she decides to listen, to watch, and to wait for the correct movement to try and make her move.

There is also Charity Butler. Her husband used to be an enslaved man, and he ended up proving his ferocity when he was a young boy standing alongside Josephine. He encourages her and due to this Charity ends up fighting for her freedom in court– and actually wins. But then she has to continue to go on to fight a system that is very unjust that is set up to try and destroy the life that they have ended up building together.

Then there is also Nathaniel. He continually exploits other Black people and mirrors the cruel nature of the other white men who are enslavers just like him. A perversion of the slavery system, his fragile rule is full of contradictions and will end up becoming its own catalyst.

Clay Cane has written a tour de force of a novel with this one and this is one story that readers will want to check out. It was inspired by the true stories of the courageous men and women who wanted to fight back.

An incredible work full of compassion, an impressive scope, and a timeliness that speaks to the present era. Check out Burn Down Master’s House by Clay Cane to see all of it for yourself and read a unique work from one of the freshest voices in fiction these days and add yet another great book to your list of books that you have read!
