The Wilder Heart of Florida: More Writers Inspired by Florida Nature is a 2021 book by Jack E. Davis. Nonfiction fans have a treat with this book, where Davis invites readers to also fall under the spell of the beautiful natural environment of Florida.

In this collection, some of the most expert and notable poets, authors, and environmentalists in Florida come together and bring the reader on a wonderful and unique journey, taking them through all the natural wonders that the state has to offer. The book features 34 pieces by some known and emerging writers. If you love nature and want to find out more specifically about what this state has to offer, this book is here to help you find out more.

Inside this book, different individuals reflect on different places in Florida and what there is to find there. Author Lauren Groff depicts the beauty that Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park has to offer. Cynthia Barnett is an environmental writer and someone who listens to seashells on Sanibel Island. Journalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas takes a look at the different sights and sounds of the Everglades– but in the twenties!

Meanwhile, Presidential Inaugural poet Richard Blanco shares his thoughts with readers on the ocean’s shifting vista, and Miccosukee elder Buffalo Tiger talks about the traditional stories of his community’s relationship with the land. They along with others share the memories of how their lives have been made even better thanks to the landscapes of the state.

Whether talking about their encounters with manatees or turtles, or the impressions made by plants or flowing springs, these stories together show just how important these natural ecosystems are to the environment and on a personal level and highlight the necessity of working to protect these ecosystems while restoring those that have been damaged from development. The result is a celebration of the wilderness of Florida that nature lovers and fans of Florida (or learning) will not want to miss!

The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America’s Bird is a 2022 book by Jack E. Davis. This was considered a great success and the book was also selected as one of the Best Books of the Month by Kirkus Reviews and the Wall Street Journal.

This is a great cultural and natural history of the bald eagle and its existence in America. Whether you’re an expert on this bird or you just want to find out more, this is the perfect book to do that with. You can find out more about this bird and even share some fun new facts and information with your friends!

The bald eagle has long been revered as a symbol of the spirit of America. It’s got a regal nature but also embodies a bit of fearlessness also. It’s the type of bird that you are not supposed to argue with. Americans have celebrated the bird as being noble and majestic, but also savaged the actual living bird behind the symbol as being a predator of livestock and even at one point the bird was rumored to be a snatcher of babies (something that was completely false).

Davis takes the reader through history since before the founding of the nation through the resurgences of this species that has come to be known as an all-American symbol. He compares the age when native people were able to peacefully coexist and live alongside the eagle along with others. Specifically, the one age that pushed this beautiful bird close to extinction thanks to DDT pesticides or hunting bounties.

This book has a variety of wonderful stories that are about everything from the lives of bald eagles to brave bird rescuers, bold hunters, the Founding Fathers and more that will fill you in on the world of this majestic bird. You may learn that they are monogamous and considered to be the finest parents in the world, or find out something else that you did not expect.

This is a great cultural and natural history that shows how this bird’s incredible journey is an inspiration today as we deal with environmental risks on a bigger scale. Check it out to see what you think and become the foremost expert that you know on bald eagles!
