Henry Green was a published author and the pen name used by Henry Vincent Yorke.

He was born in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, in the United Kingdom on October 29, 1905. The author would ultimately pass away on December 13, 1973.

Henry was born into an educated family that enjoyed successful business interests. His father was Vincent Wodehouse Yorke, a wealthy industrialist and landowner from Birmingham. His mother Hon. Maud Evelyn Wyndham was the daughter to the second Baron Leconfield.

The author would attend Eton College, a place where he made friends with fellow student Anthony Powell and where he was able to write the majority of his first novel, which was titled Blindness. He also studied at Oxford University. There he started a literary rivalry and a friendship with Evelyn Waugh.

Green departed from Oxford in 1926 without a degree. He would go back to Birmingham to take part in the family business. He began by working with the regular workers on the factory floor of the factory owned by his family, which made beer-bottling machines. He would later be the managing director. He had enough experience to write his second novel Living, working on it between 1927 and 1928.

In 1929, he married his second cousin the Hon. Adelaide Biddulph. The two were both great-grandchildren of the first Baron Leconfield, with a son born in 1934 that they named Sebastian. Green published Pack My Bag in 1940, an autobiography. During the course of the second world war Green was a fireman as part of the Auxiliary Fire Service. These experiences in war are part of his novel Caught and also proved to be a strong influence for his novel Back.

His last published novel to come out was Doting in 1952, which was the conclusion of his writing career. In later years, the author became interested in the studies of the Ottoman Empire, but also became reclusive and an alcoholic. He was a traditional Tory politically throughout the course of his life.

Nothing is a 1950 book by Henry Green. Looking for a classic that stands the test of time? This might be the right book for you.

It was years after Jane Weatherby and John Pomfret had an affair, and it almost ended up ruining their marriages. But the two are reunited when their children choose to get married, pursuing the union even though there are questions about being possibly related and the fact that they don’t have any money to their name.

Jane and John are concerned that Mary and Philip are going to have to become part of the working class by going through with this, so they try to stall the wedding plans from happening by purposefully having long conversations that are about nothing at all.

Jane is a resourceful widow and shrewd, and this gives her the chance to start a scheme that is designed to pull John and take him away from his current love interest. The plot moves further through discussions that are full of misdirection and omission. Through it, Green shows that the spoken word is ideal at hiding the true intentions of others. This is one of the author’s last novels and is a great part of classic English literature that readers will not want to miss out on.

Doting is a 1952 book by Henry Green. This book is written nearly all in dialogue, and his last novel is a comedy of manners that is able to show the difference between those who dote and those who love.

Arthur Middleton belongs to the upper middle class and he is a middle-aged individual who is living with his wife in post-World War II London. Arthur is part of a marriage without passion and finds that he is completely infatuated with Annabel, a woman who is much younger than him.

Pursuing their relationship ends up putting into motion some intertwining affairs taking place between five friends who are close but who are not as concerned with love as they are with their desire to try and keep the other lovers apart. What will happen in the end? Read this fascinating book from Henry Green to try and find out!
