Andrea Wang is an accomplished published author.

She is an award-winning writer. She is known for writing Watercress, which received a slew of honors and awards. These include the Newbery Honor, the Caldecott Medal, the APALA Award, the JLG Gold Standard Selection, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor, and seven starred reviews, as well as the Magic Ramen Freeman Book Award Honor and The Nian Monster APALA Honor.

Andrea’s novel for middle grade students is titled the Many Meanings of Meilan. It was reviewed by places such as the New York Times and has starred reviews and is a JLG Gold Standard Selection. The work that Andrea does takes a further look at things such as identity, culture, and creative thinking.

Andrea has written several nonfiction titles and has an M.S. in environmental science and then an MFA in creative writing for young people. Today, the author resides in the Denver, Colorado area along with her family.

Andrea was born in 1970 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Wang has always had a love for mythical creatures, something that she thinks came from playing with the Chinese lions at Harvard University outside of the Yenching Library, a place where her father was a professor. Everywhere that she goes, she makes sure to take photos of mythical creatures in sculpture format.

When the author was two years old their family moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio. It was a small town and she spent most of her time riding ponies as well as baking up cookies and making sure to go all over town following her older brother. She would be busy reading when she was not doing one of those things and constantly had a book in her hand, whether in bed, the dinner table, or even in the bath. She knew that she wanted to be a writer when one of her poems was published in the town newspaper.

Andrea’s family decided to move back to Massachusetts when she was in middle school. Andrea began volunteering in hospitals and attended Wellesley College. There her parents wanted her to study something like science or law. She selected biology and wanted to go to medical school, but then realized that she would rather do something else than be in a hospital her entire life.

After college Andrea obtained a Master’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Indiana- Bloomington, moving back to Massachusetts so that she could become an environmental consultant and help clean up polluted places throughout the state.

While working as an environmental consultant, Andrea got married. She had two sons and left her job, deciding to stay home with them. In her free time, she didn’t stop reading, but she had also started writing again. Andrea took classes online and got a Master’s degree in creative writing for young people from Lesley University. She’s living her old dream of being an author and is thrilled about it.

Andrea has also written picture books, such as The Nian Monster, which was picked as an Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature Honor book in 2017. Her second picture book was Magic Ramen, a nonfiction biography about the inventor of instant ramen, which was followed by Watercress, her third picture book (and her semi-autobiographical picture book).

The Many Meanings of Meilan is a 2021 book by Andrea Wang. If you’ve never before witnessed this fresh new voice in fiction, get started by checking out this book, perfect for middle school aged readers or anyone looking for an interesting read!

When a family feud goes down before seventh grade begins, Meilan is all of a sudden moved from Chinatown in Boston to a place in rural Ohio that she is not really familiar with. There she is going to have to dig deep into her sense of inner strength and her sense of justice in order to carve out a new place for herself.

Main character Mailan Hua has a world that is dependable and steady and includes a few basic players. These include the beloved matriarch of the family Nai Nai, as well as the bakery owned by her parents and her aunts and uncles in Chinatown, and then her culture, and her beloved Chinese fairy tales.

When Nai Nai unexpectedly passes, it turns out that the family has a falling out that ends up motivating Meilan along with her parents and her grandfather who is deeply in grief to take to the road and find a new home. They end up taking a winding path cross-country and eventually find themselves in a place named Redbud, Ohio.

All that you can find in Redbud is like Chinatown, but the opposite. Meilan is unsteady and not certain who she is because everything has been turned upside down. She gets renamed at school, which she dislikes, and chooses to be many Meilans instead. Each of them is inspired by a Chinese character that is pronounced the same as her name. She is sometimes Mist, sometimes Basket, and sometimes Blue. But when an injustice goes down at school, will bringing these selves together be the right move? Read this book from Andrea Wang to find out!
