Publication Order of Jennifer Wright Non-Fiction Books

Jennifer Wright is a published author responsible for some of the most interesting nonfiction books on the market. Focusing in on specific topics that range anywhere from breakups to plagues to famous figures in history you may not be familiar with, read one of her books and you’re sure to become an instant fan.

In addition to being an author, she is also the political editor-at-large for Harper’s Bazaar. She has written pop history books that have proved to be very popular with readers. These include the Audible bestseller ‘Get Well Soon: History’s Worst Plagues and the Heroes That Fought Them’, as well as ‘It Ended Badly: 13 of the Worst Break-Ups in History’ and ‘We Came First: Romantic Advice From Women Who Have Been There’.

Jennifer also takes time out to be a speaking guest as well as a panel moderator for events, schools, museums and more. Readers can see her writing in publications such as The New York Observer, The New York Post, the New York Times, Time Out New York, and more.

Madame Restell: The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Old New York’s Most Fabulous, Fearless, and Infamous Abortionist is a 2023 book by Jennifer Wright. If you have wanted to know the true story of one of the most unique women to live in America, you’re in luck with this highly interesting tale about the self-made celebrity and millionaire who was loved by her patients.

Readers are taken away to the pre-Gilded Age of New York, with its mansions and fancy carriages. Here we meet the main character, Madame Restell, the premiere abortionist in the city. She worked hard and was able to build her business from the ground up, a self-taught surgeon who provided a boarding house that provided abortions, birth control, and medical assistance to thousands of women both rich and poor.

Her practice would grow larger but as it did so would her notoriety. Because of this, Restell was a target for threats, lawsuits, and the tabloids. She did not flinch away from this but instead put on her wealth and flaunted it in the faces of everyone, going across the city in expensive clothes and jewelry and showing her success off to all. It was a bold statement to the many people who were out there trying to bring her down.

Unfortunately for her, her rise to the top of this field also aligned with the campaign to reduce women’s power through restricting their access to healthcare. Midwives and female practitioners had been taking care of public healthcare needs of men and women for centuries. But with the advent of the medical clinic, male Mds wanted to edge out their female competition by putting women back into the house and making medicine a male only practice.

Simultaneously a group of men who were threatened by women’s independence in different fields were able to persuade Christian leadership to make abortion a sin, using Christian morality to protect their own interests. The author tackles the lies that jeopardized women’s health and reveals the foundation of the modern ‘pro-life’ movement.

This is one of the most interesting books that you will read in a while. Feminist, strongly written, and thought provoking, this book is a great read that dives into women’s history in a way unlike any other. Check it out to follow along with every word.

Glitz, Glam, and a Damn Good Time: How Mamie Fish, Queen of the Gilded Age, Partied Her Way to Power is a 2025 book by Jennifer Wright. This is a unique biography about the woman who was known as ‘the ruler of the 400’ as well as ‘the theme party queen of the Gilded Age’ that goes into how she and women like her used parties and social gatherings at the time to attain power and prestige. If you love detailed life stories about people who really existed, this is the right book for you.

This book revolves around Marion Graves Anthon Fish, who also went by the nicknames ‘Mamie’ and ‘The Fun-Maker’. She was a woman who put together some of the most epic parties in the history of the country. She would host at her different residences, whether it be her Upper East Side townhouse, her Hudson River highlands retreat, or her mansion by the ocean in Newport, Rhode Island.

No matter where it was located, these soirees helped to make Mamie Fish an icon of the Gilded Age. The parties had everything, from specific themes to incredible décor to famous invitees, pranks, music, booze, surprises, animals, and more. Being a part of NY high society at the time meant that you had to be on the guest list by Mamie Fish. There was no exclusion from her parties and no higher honor than going to a gathering hosted by this woman who would invite you in and welcome you with open arms.

Parties could adhere to a wide range of themes. One party required guests to dress up as dolls and only speak in baby talk. Others had fairy tale dress codes or elephants who were fed peanuts in the ballroom or even dogs with diamond necklaces who were the honored guests and ate fancy food at the table. Mamie Fish acutely understood that people didn’t want the formality of the past, they wanted wit, whimsy, and to have fun.

This was a woman who was all about partying but also used that to exert her influence in many different arenas. This was a time when women could not own property or run for office, and if they wanted those things that men had outside of the home they must do it or get it by throwing a soiree or chairing a cotillion. Fish was a brilliant strategist and kingmaker and understood the power that a good party provided.

Mamie became a famed hostess of the Gilded Age and was able to live her life the way that she wanted to. She embraced the revelry of the age and was a perfect hostess, while also using the opportunity to advance her own social standing and power. A very interesting read from Jennifer Wright that is ideal for solo reading or a book club!
